UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. LAUGHTON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
lNKlNG-PAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,424, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed June 17, 1889. Serial No. 314,556, (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, J OSEPH B. LAUGHTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inking-Pads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
My invention consists of an inking-pad for hand-stamps in which both the upper and a lower sides are utilized separately for pads, so
that a different color may be used with each, and enabling one pad to serve the purpose of two separate pads as heretofore constructed, as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 I Figure 1 is an end elevation of my improved duplex pad, both the covers being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar View with one of-tl1e covers raised as when one of the pads is in use, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation with both the covers closed and with a part in section.
I employ any approved box, block, or other device a for the body or bed piece of the pad, preferably a block of wood, and apply thereto an inking-pad b, of any approved construction, to the respective sides, but preferably consisting of one or two layers of felt having the coloring matter or ink incorporated therewith in the proper condition for inking ahandstamp by pressing the stamp thereon with a suitable cover of muslin to make a smoother surface than the surfaceof the felt and for other purposes, said pad being of smaller area than the surface of the block to leave a plain margin all round, and preferably having a felt or textile fabric 6 of the full size of the surface of the block interposed between said surface and the pad, and over each pad I fit a cover 0, preferably of sheet metal, and having a flat top forming a suitable base for the pad to rest on when closed and using the pad of the other side. I prefer to hinge the covers to the body a, as shown at d, and in such relation that in turning the pad over sidewise the hinge-joints of both covers will come to the same position relatively to the user. The cover may of course be applied so as to lift 01f and on; but it is preferred to connect therewith by hinge-joints.
The advantage of this invention is apparent. One pad serves the purpose of two, and at the same time there is practically only one present and no parts to alter or adjust other than turning the pad over to change from one color to another.
Vith the different colors noted on the edges of the pad in the relation to the edges of the cover as the opening or hinged edges (see Fig. 3) a glance shows which side is to be placed up for the color wanted.
I claim as my invention- The improved duplex pad consisting of the base or box having a pad and an inclosingcover therefor on the opposite sides, said covers adapted for the base-support of the pad when using the pad on the other side relatively thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH B. LAUGHTON.
