AHARRY C. GOODRICH, OF CHICAGO, VILLINOIS.
ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters meent No. 424,107, dated March 25, 1890.
Application tiled January 7, 1890- Serial No. 336,185. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. GooDRIoH,
of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in the StateY of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of my invent-ion is to produce an eraser which shall be light, strong, and cheap, and be convenient inv use.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 an end View, of my improved eraser.
The eraser consists, essentially, of two parts, the partA, made of felt or similar material, constituting the erasing-surface, and the part B, which forms a stiff backing for the erasing material. The backing B is formed of wood pulp, of straw-board, of Wood veneer, or other material of a like nature, bent or curved to a partially tubular shape, the erasing material being secured to the outside of the curve so formed. A stiiiening-pie C is inserted in the concave side of the backing-piece B to strengthen it, so as to keep it from bending in the grasp of the hand.
The use of the piece B is not absolutely necessary, as the backing-piece maybe made thick enough to dispense with it, as shown in Fig. 3.
There is an advantage in omitting the piece C, in that the erasers may be packed more closely together, the convex side of one eraser fitting in the concave side of the adjacent one.
Far less material is consumed in making an eraser in the manner described than is ordinarily necessary where a solid .back is used, the expense of the eraser being correspondinglyreduced, andthe portion remaining after wearing away the erasive surface is of so little value as to entail no loss in throwing it away.
I claim* An eraser consisting ot' a piece of erasing material secured to the convex surface of a backing-piece formed of a part 0f a tube and adapted to be grasped in the hand, substantially as described.
HARRY C. GOODRICH.
