WITNBSSESL UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
HENRY TIBBE, OF WASHINGTON, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND ANTON TIBBE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,816, dated July 9, 1878; application filed May 10, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY TIBBE, of Washington, in the county of Franklin and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Pipe, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to smoking-pipes, more especially those made of corn-cobs, the object being to improve their durability and appearance, and facilitate their being cleaned.
The invention consists in a smoking-pipe made of corn-cob, in which the interstices are filled with a plastic, self-hardening cement; and in a smoking-pipe, in which the stem is connected with the head by being fitted upon a central tube extending through, and secured in the bottom of, the pipe-head, said tube being provided with a side perforation communicating with the socket of the pipe-head, as will be hereinafter described.
The accompanying drawing represents two modifications of a corn-cob pipe constructed according to my invention, Figure 1 being a side view, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the head, and B the stem, of the pipe. These are made of corn-cob, in which the interstices are filled with plaster-of-paris, or other suitable plastic mass or cement. After the cement has hardened the pipe may be worked to a smooth finish, and be polished, if desired. The cement hardens the material,
making it more durable and less liable to be burned out.
The head of the pipe is bored clear through, and its bottom formed by tightly fitting a wooden plug, 0, in the lower end of the hole. The advantage of the wooden plug O is, that it helps, by absorption, to keep the pipe dry,
and affords a firm fastening for the central tube D of the stem. This tube is inserted from the side clear through the lower end of the pipe-head A, and through the bottom plug 0, by being driven into a tight-fitting hole made for that purpose, and its lower end, below the bottom of the socket in the pipe, is closed by a screw-plug, E.
The corn-cob stem B is bored through its axis suitably to be fitted tight on the tube D, and its lower end is out off conformably to the inclination of the stem and to the curvature of the head, so as to fit snugly to the latter at the point of contact.
Oommunicationis formed between the socket in the pipe-head A and the interior of the tube D by a small perforation, 01, being made in the side of the latter directly opposite to the drafthole ain the bottom plug 0.
The central tube D of the stem 13, being straight, is easily cleaned after removing the screw-plu g G.
In Fig. 1, the connection between the perforation d, in the tube 1), and the draft-hole a, in the plug 0, is not immediate, but is effected by a short connecting tube or pipe, F.
1 do not limit myself to the exact form of any of the part-s here shown, as they may be varied without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of man ufacture, a smokingpipe made of corn-cob, in which the interstices are filled with a plastic, self-hardening cement, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
HENRY TIBBE.
