STOVE-PIPE SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,611, dated March 18 1890.

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. LONGYEAR, of Fly Mountain, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Stove-Pipe Shelf, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to that class of stovepipe shelves and supports in which a collar to be adj ustably clamped on stove-pipes is employed having a number of bracket-arms, and shelves and arms adj ustably connected to the bracket-arms.

The invention has for its object to provide a device of the above character, by means of which the collar may be firmly clamped to any-sized stove-pipe, and one or more shelves and one or more arms may be readily connected to and detached from and securely supported in horizontal position by bracketarms on the collar.

The invention consists in an adjustable stove -pipe-clamping collar having bracketarms, with detachable shelves and arms adjustably connected to the bracket-arms, and in details thereof, constructed and arranged as hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in-which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

In carrying out this invention, to enable the collar to be readily adjusted to clamp and be firmly held to any size of stove-pipe, the collar is preferably constructed as follows:

This collar 1 is formed with the section 3, and the sections 4 hinged thereto, and the sections 5 adapted to slide in the sections 4 to enlarge or diminish the circumference of the collar 1, and adj ustably connected to the sections 4 by means of a series of bolt-holes 6 in the sections 5, and bolts 7 passing through bolt-holes in the sections 5 and land secured by nuts 8. The

sections 5 are formed with theends 9 proj ecting at an angle thereto and inclined away from each other. Through holes in the ends 9 passes a bolt 10, having a wing-nut 11. By this means the collar 1 may be drawn tightly about a stove-pipe, the sections 5 having been adjusted on the sections 4 to enlarge or di-.

minish the circumference of collar 1, according to the size of the stove-pipe to be clamped. A space being left between the inclined ends 9, as shown, in adjusting the sections 5 the collar 1 may be clamped tightly by screwing up the wing-nut 11. To also enable the collar to fit closely about the particular stovepipe to be clamped, the collar is formed of flexible malleable metal, thereby enabling the collar to conform to the circumference of the stove-pipe as it is clamped.

The collar 1 is provided with any desired number of bracket-arms 12, for attaching and adj ustably holding detachable shelves and arms. The bracket-arms 12 are formed with the narrowed portion 13 terminating at the outer end in the upturned hook 14, the point of the latter rising partway toward the top of the narrowed portion 13. At the rear of the narrowed portion 13 and at the top of the bracket-arms 12 the latter are formed with the stops or shoulders and the curved recesses 15, and in the sides of the narrowed portion 13 are located grooves 16, having a rounded upwardly-curved rear end 17, terminating in the rear of the shoulder 15 and adjacent to a shoulder 18, and an upwardlycurved outer or forward open end terminating at the rear of the hooked end 14.

19 indicates a stove-pipe shelf of any suitable shape and pattern and formed with a shank 20, having the arms 21, equal in length and height to the narrowed portion 13 of arms 12., The arms 21 are formed on their ends with the rounded upwardly-curved projections 22, and an adjacent curved recess 23, forming shoulders 23', the projections 22 being of a size to project into the curved recesses 15, and the curved recesses 23 being of a size to receive the shoulders 15 at the rear of the narrowed portion 13 of bracketarms 12. The projections 22 are formed with rounded projections 24, extending toward each other and adapted to fit the grooves 16 in the sides of 'the' narrowed portion 13 of arms 12. The inner end of shank is formed with a recess and a rib or flange 26, adapted to interlock with the hook 14 at the end of arm 12.

By means of the foregoing-described construction of bracket-arm 12 and shelf 19 with shank 20 a shelf 19 may be connected to an arm 12 by moving the projections 24 into and along the groove 16 to their rear rounded ends 17, thereby bringing the hook 14 and the recess 25 and flange 26 into interlocking engagement, the

15 and 23 abutting, and the rounded projections 22 being located in the recesses 15 adjacent to shoulders 18, and the shelf 19 being securely held and supported in horizontal position.

When the shelf 19 is not required for use, it may be suspended from bracket-arm 12 by lifting it up to disengage shank 20 from hooli 14 and slightly drawing forward the projections 24 in grooves 16, when the shelf may be swung down and will be suspended by the projections 24. The shelf 19 is also formed with legs 27, whereby the shelf 19, when detached from arm 12, may be used as a sadiron holder or a support for various utensils,

the shank 20 serving as a handle whereby the shelf 19 may be carried about. In addition to a shelf or shelves 19, one or more de tachable arms 28 are provided to support towels or other articles, having an attachingshank 29, constructed similarly to shank 2O of shelf 19 with arms 30,inwardly-extending projections 31 at the ends of arms 30, arecess 32, and a rib or flange 33. The arms 30 are however shorter than the arms 21 of shank 20, and are formed without the rounded curved projections 22 of shank 20, so as to permit shank 29 to be attached to arm 12 at the same time, with a shelf 19 suspended therefrom,

without interfering with the shank 20 of the suspended shelf 19. I

By means of the foregoing construct on a shelf or to wel-arm, or both,may be connected to a bracket-arm 12, and shelves and towelarms supported on the several bracket-arms 12. The shelves and towel arms may be readily attached and detached to and from the bracket-arms 12 and will be securely supported thereon, and the adjustable collar may be effectively and firmly clamped to any sized stove-pipe.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A stove-pipe-clamping collar having one or more shelf-supporting arms formed with an upwardly-projecting hook at the outer end, and slots in the sides with upwardlycurved' ends, the outer end being open and the inner end having shoulders adjacent thereto, in combination with one or more detachable shelves havinga shank formed with parallel arms having lateral projections at their outer ends extending toward each other and engaging the lateral slots in the shelfsupporting arms, and a recess with a rib or flange at their inner ends engaging the upwardly-projecting hook on the shelf-supportin g arm, substantially as shown and described.

2. A stove-pipe-clamping collar having a shelf-supporting arm formed with an upwardly-projecting hook at its end and slots in its sides with upwardly-curved ends, the outer ends being open and the inner'ends having shoulders adjacent thereto, substantially as shown and described.

3. A detachable stove-pipe shelf provided with a shank formed with parallel arms having lateral projections at their outer ends extending toward each other, and a recess and rib or flange at their inner end, substantially as shown and described.

4. A stove-pipe collar formed of malleable flexible metal, and having laterally-projecting inclined ends connected by a bolt and nut, substantially as shown and described.

5. A stove-pipe collar provided with one or more shelf -supporting bracket-arms 12, formed with the narrowed portion 13, having the upwardly-projecting hook 14 at its outer end and the grooves 16 in its sides with I IIO upwardly-curved ends, the outer ends being open and the inner ends having shoulders adjacent thereto, substantially as shown and described.

6. A stove-pipe shelf 19, with a shank 20, having parallel arms 21, with the recess 25 and rib 26 at their inner end, and the recesses 23, upwardly-curved projections 22, and inwardly-extending lateral projections 24 at their outer ends, substantially as shown and described.
