STOVE-PIPE SHELF.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,520, dated 0ctober 22, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that LWILLIAM H. JULIAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Clarke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Shelves, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to attachments for the smoke-pipes of stoves, ranges, &c., which are designed to support various articles and vessels containing eatables in such position as to be warmed by the heat from the stove.

The object of my present invention is to provide a stove-pipe shelf having detachable and adjustable supports for the vessels to be warmed, such supports to be so arranged as to be hung in pendent position, out of the way when not in use, and when in such a position serving as a partial support for an auxiliary attachment for holding towels and similar articles to be dried.

To the above purposes my invention consists in certain peculiar and novel features of construction and in certain combinations of parts, as hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure illustrates in perspective a stove-pipe shelf constructed in accordance with my invention.

In the said drawing, the letter A designates an annulus or ring composed of two semiannular parts hinged together at a and formed at a point opposite the hinge with two radial outwardly-extending arms I), through which passes a bolt 0. This bolt 0 receives a nut d, as shown, and the arrangement is such that when the annulus or ring A is placed on the stove-pipe its ends are drawn together by the nut 01, and the ring is thereby held securely upon the pipe.

At suitable intervals upon the outer side of each section of the ring or annulus A are formed integral jaws B, which are disposed in pairs, as shown, projecting radially from the ring. There may be either the precise number of these pairs of jaws shown, or more or less, as desired. The inner ends of each pair of jaws are connected by an arch or bridge 6 formed integrally with the jaws and connecting their upper edges, as shown. These upper edges of these jaws are also formed with two notches or recesses 12' 19 for a purpose to be hereinafter described, and the jaws themselves are thicker at their inner than at their outer ends, in orderto facilitate drawing the pattern from the mold in manufacturing the device. It is preferred to round oi the lower outer ends of the jaws, as seen in the draw- I) designates one of the shelves for the vessel or utensil, said shelves preferably corresponding in number with the jaws above referred to, and being also either of the precise form shown, or of any other form suitable to the purpose in view. In either event the shelf is form ed with an arm D, as shown. This arm is formed on its upper side with a notch d, and has a reduced end,for purposes to be presently explained. The outer portion of the arm D is also formed with two laterallyextending studs d Thus when the support is in operative or horizontal position the studs .d rest in the notches b of the jaws B, and the reduced end engages beneath the arch b of the latter. When, however, the support is not in use as such, it is sustained entirely by the studs (1 and the support occupies a pendent position, as shown.

When the support is in the pendent position above described, its notch 01 serves to sustain the inner end of an auxiliary armE, as shown. The inner extremity of this arm is of broad flat form to engage the notch d. Two lat eral studs 6 extend from near the inner end of the arm and take into the notches b of the jaws B. The outer end of the armE is formed with a skeleton socket 6 to receive one end of a bar F, upon which a towel or other article may be hung, as described, the arm being bent so as to cause the bar to extend horizontally from the arm when the latter is in operative connection with the shelf.

From the above description it will be seen that the device is simple and durable in construction and capable of a wide range of usefulness, and. that it may be readily manipulated by an ordinary domestic without previous practice.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with an annulus or ring constructed of parts joined together so as to be opened and placed around a stovepipe and provided with securing devices, and one or more jaws, each composed of two members reduced in thickness toward their outer ends and notched in their upper sides, and a bridge or arch extending from one member to the other at their inner ends, of one or more shelves, each having an arm notched at its inner end fit to the underside of said arch, and having lateral pins to it said notches, the pins being arranged to rest upon the members of the jaws when the inner end of the arm is disengaged to support the shelves in a pendent position.

2. The combination, with an annulus adapted to be fitted upon a stove-pipe and one or more jaws extending therefrcm,of one or more shelves, each having an arm with lat eral projections supporting it in a pendent position within a jaw, and a socket-arm having lateral projections supportingit upon the jaw, and engaging at its inner end with the pendent shelf-arm.

3. The combination, with an annulus adapted to be fitted upon a stove-pipe and one or more jaws extending therefrom, each composed of two members having notches in their upper edges, of one or more shelves,- each having an arm provided with lateral pins which support the arm Within a jaw, a notch in the outer face of the arm, and one or more socket-arms, each having a bar fitted in its socket, and lateral pins at its inner end, which rest in said notches,while its inner extremity engages the notch in the pendent arm.

4. In an improved attachment for stoves, an annulus adapted to be fitted upon a stove pipe and jaws cast integrally therewith, each jaw being composed of two members connected at their inner ends on the upper sides by an arch or bridge tapered toward their outer ends, and each provided with two notches in their upper edge.
