DEVICE FOR CURLING HAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,869, dated February 18, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER EvIsoN RUSH- FORTH, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Curling Hair; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to improvements in devices for curling hair or frizzing the same, and the novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which 4 Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved curling device in a closed position as when applied to the hair. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the hair-receiving branches open ready to use. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device in a closed position.

In carrying out my invention I take a strip A, of suitable material such as sheet metal and bend the same about midway of its length, so as to form the'small loop a, for a purpose which will be presently explained. From this loop the branches are bent laterally, as shown at l), for a sufficient distance, according to the size of the device required, after which they are carried longitudinally in parallel branches (Z, and thence contracted in an oblique direction, as shown at 6, when they terminate in two parallel branches f to pivotally receive the hair-clamping branches or jaws.

B indicates the jaws to receive the hair to be curled. These jaws are preferably formed from narrow strips of spring sheet metal, and are pivoted at one end between the branches f, as by a stud g, the opposite ends of the said branches being adapted to be turned into the loop a at the opposite end of the part A and sprung therein, so as to confine the jaws within theloop in curling the hair or holding it in a wound position.

The operation is as follows: The device being opened in the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the hair to be curled is placed between the jaws B, which will clamp the same and hold it therein. The person then taking hold of the part A winds the hair upon the jaws B until sufficiently tight. The loop A is then turned over upon the jaws with the hair confined between them until the outer ends of the said jaws are sprung into a small loop a, when it may be left upon the hair for fifteen or twenty minutes to friz or To remove the device from the hair, it is 7 simply necessary to throw the loop A back upon its hinge or pivotal point, when the jaws may be withdrawn from the hair with out any difficulty.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a hair-curling device consisting of a loop and two jaws or branches pivoted to one end of said loop and adapted to be turned into the latter, substantially as specified.

2. A hair curling device consisting of a loop and two branches or jaws pivoted there-- to adapted to receive hair between them and be turned into the loop, said main loop having a small loop 'at one end to receive the free ends of the jaws or branches to hold the same, substantially as specified.

3. A hair-curling device consisting of a 0 loop and two pivoted yielding branches adapted to receive hair between them, the loop having means for confining the free ends of the branches Within the loop, substantially as specified.
