UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
KAUFMANN KAUFMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW, JERSEY.
TRAVELING BAG OR SATCHEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,079, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed July 19, 1889.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, KAUFMANN KAUFM'ANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Traveling Bags or Satchels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of .this invent-ion is to utilize in the manufacture of bags what are known as scraps and f trimmings to reduce the cost of manufacture and to stiffen the sides of the bag.
The invention consists in the improved bag, its construction, and the combination and arrangements of its parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of'reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures, Figure 1 is a front view of a bag embodying my improved construction; and Fig. 2 is a section of the same on line as, showing the mode of fastening the pieces together with there-enforcing cord.
In said drawings, A represents a bag com- Serial No, 3153,0361 (No model.)
posed in this instance of three separate and independent sections or pieces a. b c on each side, and end pieces d cl, which can be made integral with the pieces a and 0 or be made separate therefrom, as may be preferred. Any ordinary frame 6 can be used. The pieces a, b, and c are stitched together, as shown at f, Fig. 2, and on the inside and near the ends are inserted re-enforcing cords g g, secured in position by stitching h h.
By my improved mode of constructing bags scraps and trimmings can be used in the body, and thus a great saving in cost be effected, while by inserting a cord near where the edges of the pieces meet, as shown, the sides of the bag are re-enforced and made much stiffer and more capable of resisting pressure than bags of ordinary construction.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The herein described bag or satchel, consisting of a frame and end pieces, and the sides comprising a series of strips or pieces connected together and provided with re-enforces at the connecting edges.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of July, 1889.
KAUFM ANN KAUFMANN.
