GATE-LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,015, dated February 11, 1890.
Application filed July 17, 1889,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES RAMSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moon township, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered a certain new and useful Improvement in Latches, of which improvement the following is a specification.
The purpose of my invention is to make a simple cheap latch which will securely hold a door or gate and cannot be opened by animals.
In the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a farm-gate with my latch fastened to a post. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the latch up and with one side of the shell removed to show the interior. Fig. 4 is a like view with latch down. Fig. 3 is an edge view of shell on the side opposite to the latchfinger. Fig. 5 is a side view of the strikingarm. Fig. 6 is a side view of the slide and latch-finger.
To make my latch I take a shell 1, preferably of iron, of convenient size, and, as seen in Fig, 3, desirably open on one edge, with a strip 11 across it. A strap 1 runs across the top. One edge of the shell opposite the open edge and about midway of its length has a sloping hole or slot cut from the inside to the outside, (marked 7.) On the inside of the shell and about one-third of the distance from the bottom is a lug 6, and on the other side is a lug 10 near the bottom of the in- Serial No. 317,771. (No model.)
side of the shell 1. Screw-holes are also left in the shell to secure it to the post. On the inside of the shell moves a slide 9, having an upwardly-projecting arm 3. The slide 9 has a slot extending nearly its whole length, in which moves a tongue or finger-latch 5 pivoted therein. WVhen the gate is to be left open, the arm 3 will be raised, and as there is some play inside the shell the slide can be set over to one side upon the lug 6. When the gate is swung together, the striking-arm thereon 2 will knock the slide 9 off its lug 6 and drop the tongue 5 down through the slot 7, throwing it across the gate and firmly holding it shut. The slide 9 will drop against the lug 10. 7
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- A. gate-latch consisting of a shell 1, with an opening at the top and at the side, and a slide 9, moving within said shell and having an upwardly-extending arm 3, to engage with a suitable striking-arm on post or gate, said slide also having a tongue 5, pivoted thereto and resting when up upon the lug 6 upon the inside of the shell 1, all substantially as shown and described.
