Description

M. M. ZELLERS.
Mmmm-WORKER.
Patented May 22,1877..
VEN T01? .Aitor ey.;
@MW @7g/JWM WITNESSES rUNITEn STATES PATENT OFFICE-J MAHLON M. ZELLERS, OF KENT, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-WORKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,996, dated May 22, 1877; application filed May 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I, MAHLON M. ZELLERS,
of Kent, in the county of Portage and Stateof Ohio, have .invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter Openers, Closers, and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, Vsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved shutter opener, closer, fastener, and holder, which locks automatically on the inside of the room when the shutter is closed, and operates to open it, and to retain it in position when open.
Figure l of the drawing is an isometric view of a window frame and shutter embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detached view of the shutter opening, closing, and fastening device. Figs. 3 and 4 show the locking mechanism, as seen from within.
My invention consists in the combination, with pivoted bars attached to the shutters and extending through the window-frame, of a spring secured within the opening in the window-frame to secure the notched bar and lock the shutters, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.
A represents the window frame; B, the shutter, to the under side, or near the lower end, of which the link c is pivoted. To the other end of said link c is pivoted the bar or shaft b, which slides in an opening, w, in or under the sill, and extends through and into the room. Said shaft is provided with a notch, h, which acts in connection with the spring f and notched or slotted plate g, the latter shown detached in Fig. 3. The bar or link a is pivoted to shaft b, and is provided with a handle, as shown. d is a guide-plate, fixed on the sill to prevent the lateral movement of bar b. Near the inner termination of passage is fixed a spring, f, which acts on the bar b, so that when the notch h thereof is brought opposite the plate g in the act of closing the shutter, it causes said plate to engage with said notch, and thus lock the shutter. The bar or link a can then be turned under the sill, because of the joint n, so as to be out of the way.
When it is desired to open the shutter, the bar a is brought into line with bar b, and the latter is pushed outward by the former, until the shutter has assumed its full open position, when, in order to cause it to be retained therein, the bar b is pushed still farther outward until the link c assumes a right or acute angle therewith, and in this manner the shutter is held or fastened, and prevented from being accidentally closed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The spring f, secured in the opening of the Window-frame, in combination with the shutter and links a c, notched link b, and catch g, whereby the spring serves to automatically lock the notched link b to the catch g, and thereby secure the shutter in a xed open or closed position, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAHLON M. ZELLERS.
