SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 420,702, dated February 4, 1890.
Application filed July 31, 1889. Serial No. 319,280. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ANTHONY J. SOHIN- DLER and KARL SCHNEIDER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thumb-Tacks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a springkey adapted for use in connection with our improved tack. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the said key attached to the tack, which tack is in section. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the tack, and Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same.
The head 10 of the tack is provided with two apertures or openings 11, located, respectively, one at each side of the center, the walls of the said openings upon the under face of the head of the tack being rabbeted or countersunk, as illustrated at 12 in Fig. 4.
The key used in connection with this tack consists of a piece of spring metal, preferably wire, bent upon itself to form an essentially-U shaped body 13, and in the out-er face of each member of said body, at the lower end, a transverse recess 14 is produced to form opposite outwardly-extending projections, while upon one of the members of the body, above the recessed end and preferably below the center, a plate 15 is rigidly secured in any suitable or approved manner, which plate is adapted to contact with the thumb of the operator to facilitate pressing the members of the body 13 in the direction of each other.
Heretofore in the use of tacks, thumb-tacks especially, the finger-nails, a knife, or other similar implement have been employed to By using the device above described and providing the head of the tack with the apertures shown the tack may be expeditiously and conveniently removed, and it is accomplished in this wise: The operator grasps the key and forces the two members together by pressure of the forefinger and thumb sufficiently to enter the extremities of the members into the apertures 11 of the tack-head. The members are then released, whereupon they spring apart and the walls of the openings 11 enter the recesses 14. of the members of the key, thus effectually tying the key to the tack, the oppositely-extending projections formed by said openings engaging the lower rabbeted portions of the head and permitting the operator by lifting upon the said key to withdraw the said tack.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a thumb-tack or equivalent article having apertures produced in its head, and the surface surrounding the apertures upon the under face rabbeted, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the head of a tack or similar article provided with apertures the walls of which are rabbeted, of a spring-key having parallel arms provided at the extremities of their free end with projections to engage the rabbeted portions of the said apertures, substantially as set forth.
