Description

I oooooo 1.
G. 'L. PFOU'I'S. HOLDER FOR METALLIC STAPLES No. 484,608. v Patente dflfit. 18, 1892.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE L. PFOUTS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
- HOLDER F OR METALLIC STAPLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 484,608, dated October 18, 1892.
Application filed June 29, 1892.
To 11% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. PEoUTs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Metallic Staples, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a holder applicable to a machine or device requiring to be supplied with wire staples, the same being constructed of an expausible bar, on which the staples are strung and firmly held, the contraction of the bar relieving the staples, whereby they may be easily displaced, as needed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a holder for metallic staples embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a transverse vertical section on an enlarged scale, the parts being separated. Fig. 3 represents a transverse vertical section, the parts being in operative position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to "the drawings, A designates a bar in which is a recess B, extending in the longitudinal direction thereof and forming the flexible and expansible legs C, the recess B intervening between said legs.
D designates a key, which is of a wedging shape in cross-section, the same being adapted to enter the recess B, and thereby expand or spread the legs 0.
The operation is as follows: The staples are Serial No. 438,388. (No model.)
loosely strung on the bar, so that the limbs of the staples freely embrace the legs 0. The key is then forced into the recess B, whereby said legs are pressed against the limbs of the staples, thus firmly holding the latter on the bar, so that the staples as strung and held may be conveyed elsewhere, packed, transported, applied to a stapling-machine or otherwise handled, according to requirements, it being evident that when the key is removed or loosened the legs contract and the staples are relieved of pressure, so that they may be stripped or displaced from the bar without difficulty.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters .Patent, is
1. A bar provided with a recess and a key entering said recess for expanding the sides or legs of said bar formed by said recess, the parts named being combined substantially as described, forming an improved holder for metallic staples.
2. A bar provided with a recess in one side thereof, forming flexible legs, and a wedgingkey adapted to enter said recess and expand said legs, combined substantially as described.
3. A holder for a staple, formed of a bar with side pieces or legs thereon, and a device adapted to expand said legs, whereby the staple straddling said bar may be firmly retained thereon, substantially as described. GEORGE L. PFOUTS.
