UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. MCDOWELL, OF LOlVER MERION, PENNSYLVANIA.
OVEN FOR STOVES OR RANGES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,021, dated January '7, 1890.
- Application filed August 29, 1889. Serial No. 322,344. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM L. MCDOW- ELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lower Merion, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ovens for Stoves or Ranges, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an oven having a plate which is removably supported in position, as herein described and claimed,.thus providing means whereby the dust-chamber and other parts are conveniently accessible for purposes of cleansing, &c.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of an oven embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of an oven'plate embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a portion of said plate, taken from another position. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section thereof. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section there'- of. Fig. 6 represents a perspective View of a portion of a shelf embodying my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates an oven, on the side and rear walls of which are horizontal ledges B B.
Below the ledges of the side walls are flanges C, to receive the sides D of the ovenplate E, which latter is removable from the oven, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, said sides being depressed so that the remainder of the plate is flush with the side ledges B. At the back of said plate E is a lip F, which is raised above the adjacent portion of the plate and extends in inclined direction, said lip resting on the rear ledge B. At the center of the lip, on the upper face thereof, is a bed G, which bears against a tongue H, the latter projecting from the rear wall of the oven above the ledge B. At the front of the plate is a downwardly-projecting lip J, which enters a recess K in the front wall of the oven, said wall having pivoted to it a button L, which is adapted to tighten against said lip and thereby hold the plate tightly in position.
On the floor M of the oven, or corresponding portion of the stove or range to which the oven is applied, is a vertical plate N, which extends diagonally across the floor and occupies a position between the same and the oven-plate, whereby the latter is supported at and about its middle portion. lVhen the door is open, the plate is presented to the oven and pushed thereinto, the sides D e11- tering between the ledges B and flanges O. The lip F rides up the ledge B, and the bed G bears against the tongue H, and thus the back or rear of the plate is held tightly in position and prevented from rattling.
The button L serves to lock the plate at the front thereof for evident purposes. lVhen the button is properly turned, the plate may be withdrawn and the dust-chamber and spaces below the plate made accessible for cleansing purposes.
On the front of the plate, at the sides thereof, are eyes P, which occupy positions forward of recesses Q in the front wall of the oven, said eyes receiving the lugs R, which project upwardly from the rear 'wall of a. shelf S. Projecting downwardly from said wall are feet T, which rest against the front wall, whereby the shelf is nicely supported and may be conveniently detached when removal is required.
If desired, the flange C may be continuous, similar to the ledges B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. An oven having ledges and flanges on its inner sides and an oven-plate having depressed side portions, the latter being between the said ledges and flanges, substantially as described.
2. An even having ledges on its sides and rear and flanges on its sides, a vertical plate intermediate of said sides, and an oven-plate with depressed sides resting on said plate, substantially as described.
3. An oven havinga ledge and an ovenplate provided with an inclined lip which rests 011 said. ledge, substantially as described.
4. An oven having a tongue on the interior thereof and an oven-plate provided with a bed which is engaged with said tongue, substantially as described.
5. An oven-plate having a lip J, in combiouter wall of the oven, substantia llyas described.
WILLIAM L. MCDOWELL.
