UNITED: STATES; PATENT GEORGE J. BORN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK S. BISSELL, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROILER' ATTACHMENTS FOR STOVES, RANGES, &c.
- Specification forming part of Letters Tatent No. 21] ,550, dated January 21, 1879; application filed November 16, 1878. i
To all whom it may concern";
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. BORN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Broiler Attachments for Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of devices embodying my invention, the cover of the receptacle being withdrawn and the receptacle partially turned, as when removing the ashes from beneath the grate. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, showing the position of the parts when broiling. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detached views of the devices.
Like -letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
This invention relates to the construction and arrangement of certain portions of or attachments to stoves, ranges, 850., for use in broilin g, toasting, and for like purposes; and consists, first, in a movable or swinging receptacle or hearth adapted to contain a drip-pan and broiler, and so constructed that the broiler may be turned up before the grate when in use, and the receptacle can be turned out of the way when the ashes are to be removed, or when for any reason it is desirable to reach the ash-pit; secondly, in combining, with the movable or swinging hearth, a pan pivoted thereon, and adapted to hold the drip-pan and be turned therewith into position before the grate; and, finally, in details of construction hereinafter more specifically set forth.
The present invention may be considered as an improvement on Letters Patent N o. 207 ,286, dated July 25, 1878, and has for its object, first, to construct the devices so that they may be applied to ranges, stoves, &c., as at present constructed, or which have no sunken hearth; and, secondly, to facilitate the removal of ashes from the ash-pit without liability of scatterin g the same over the broilin g devices, for which latter purpose I may form the swinging broiler-receptacle, so that it will, if desired, constitute the hearth of the stove.
I will now proceed to describe my invention,
so that others skilled in the art to which it being produced by pivoting that portion of the hearth marked off bythe dotted line This hearth or receptacle B has a depression or cavity, b, adapted to receive a pan or equivalent, 0, having pintles c, which fit into cavities b of the receptacle B, said pan 0 being also provided with slotted lugs or eyes 0 or equivalent means, which take over lugs or projections d on the front for locking the devices in position before grate a.
0 indicates the first or outer pan, pivoted to the hearth, as before specified, and adapted to receive the regular drip-pan e, which may be so arranged as to be entirely inclosed and concealed when the shifting top b of the receptacle is in place. (1 indicates the broiler, which,
in the present instance, is provided with a long handle, to accommodate which the drippan eis slotted, as is also the outer pan, 0. When not in use this broiler d is removed, though, if preferred, a short-handled broiler which can be stored in the cavity 1) can be used.
Devices, substantially as specified, are employed as follows: The cover of the receptacle having been swung back, and the meat to be broiled having been placed in the broiler, the broiler is placed in the pan, (0 or e,) and the outer pivoted pan is turned up into position. before the grate, the slotted lugs or latches 0 taking over the catches on the stove or range front, and the devices closing the ash-pit in such manner as to confine any objectionable smoke, 86C.
When not required the broiler is removed and the cover or top of the receptacle or hearth is replaced, inclosing the drip-pan, &c., and giving to the whole a neat and symmetrical appearance. If it is desirable to clean the ash-pit, thewhole hearth B can be swung around or removed.
Either of the pans c or 6 may be dispensed with, as, though two are desirable, but a single one is necessary.
The advantages of my invention are the facility with which the ash-pit can be reached and cleaned without soiling the drip-pan, 8tc., and the ability to apply the devices to old as well as new stoves, ranges, 80c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The movable or independent hearth or receptacle provided with a suitable cover and a pivoted drip-pan, adapted to be turned up before the grate, substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a stove or range, a
pivoted drip-pan arranged within the swinging hearth or receptacle, said pan provided with lugs or catches, substantially as and for the purpose specified. 3. The independent or movable hearth or receptacle provided with the pivoted pan and the detachable drip-pan, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I, the said GEORGE J. BORN, have hereunto set my hand.
' GEORGE J. BORN.
