2 Claims.

This invention relates to an outdoor fire box or fireplace, preferably adapted to hold charcoal or other suitable fuel, and particularly adapted for cooking.

Among the objects of the present invention is to provide a cast iron outdoor charcoal fireplace composed of knockdown cast iron parts, all of which are substantially flat, to promote convenience in shipping and assembly.

Yet another object of the invention resides in providing an outdoor cast iron fireplace pivotally mounted upon a pedestal, whereby the same may be turned in various directions in accordance with the direction of the Wind to enhance the draft.

Yet another object of the invention resides in providing an outdoor fireplace having the fire box provided with front and rear clean-out doors, which may be simply and easily adjusted to draft positions.

Yet another object of the invention resides in providing a fireplace of the foregoing character wherein the top grill sections are pivotally mounted in a horizontal plane, not only for inserting fuel upon the grate, but also for permitting the grill portions to be swung away from the zone of fire, if desired.

Yet another object of the invention resides in providing a simple type of spit for roasting chickens and the like over the top grill.

Further objects of the invention will be apparent from a perusal of the following specification when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved outdoor fireplace;

Figure 2 is a plan view of the same;

Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a sectional view showing the manner in which the grate is mounted in the side members; and

Figure 5 is a view showing the construction whereby the front and back members are united to the side members.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the outdoor fireplace is preferably designed to be swivelly mounted upon an upright pedestal 2. The fireplace itself comprises a bottom ash pan 4 having its bottom horizontally disposed, the bottom being provided with an opening to receive the upper end of the pivotal post 2, a cotter pin 6 preferably passing through a hole in the tube to maintain the base assembled on the upper end of the post. The bottom of the ash pan is preferably rectangular in shape and is provided on each side with upwardly inclined lips or flanges 8 and H]. In addition there are two side pieces 12 and it which are bolted to the ash pan by means of bolts 5. In addition, there is a back fireside l6, and a grated front fireside l8, and a' grate member 20. In order to hold the grate 20 in position, the two sides are each provided with horizontal grooves 22 to receive the end portions '24 of the grate 20. In addition the sides are provided with shoulders 26 at their top, adapted to receive lugs 28 on the top end portions of the frontgrate member is and the back member Hi. In addition, bolts 3!] pass through the edges of the side members and engage the front grate l8 and the back member [6 whereby to hold these in rigid assembly.

32 and 36 are pivoted as at 36 and 38 to the side members [2 and [4 respectively whereby at least the front clean-out door may be swung to variously adjusted positions. The bottom 40 of each clean-out door is adapted to rest upon the top lip 42 and 44 of the flanges 8 and ill of the ash pan so as to close these openings when desired. In addition the front clean-out door 32 is provided with a pair of spaced apart lugs 46 having registering apertures 48 through which a pin 5!] passes, said pin likewise passing through an apertured lug 52 on a latchin device 54, the inner upper face of which is provided with a series of notches 56 and the outer end of which is provided with a lever-like extension 58 carrying a ring 60. By means of this construction the latch 54 may have any one of the notches resting on the upper lip 44 of the ash pan, whereby to hold the door in open adjusted position.

62 and 64. Each one of these grills is provided with lugs such as 66 and 68 which are pivotally mounted as at '10 and 12 to a corresponding lug l4 and 16 on the top side of the back member IS. A stop 11 on the front member 18 provides means whereby the two grills may be swung into parallelism fully to cover the top of the fire box. As shown in Figure 1, these grills may be conveniently swung to open position in order to load the fire box or to remove a steak or other foodstuff being cooked on the grill, if desired.

In addition, one or both of the sides is provided with an outstanding lug 18 having a vertical ap erture therethrough. These lugs 78 are apertured underneath to provide hand holes for lifting the fire box, if desired. In addition, an upstanding rod 82 is swivelly mounted by means of 3 a cotter pin 84 in the holes 80 of the lug 78, the upper ends of the rod 82 projecting well above the

Obviously the invention is not limited to the specific details of construction disclosed herein but is capable of other modifications and changes without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
