COOKING UTBNSIL.
No, 597,535 Patented Jan. 18,1898.
Il; u. /@GOOOOOQOOOOOGOO gli'. O :z O O ,000000000010000 O Afrnrvr rrrcn ANNIE L. BLISS, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
(LOOKINGV UTENSIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,535, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed June 30| 1897 To @ZZ whom t moz-y concern:
Be it known that I, ANNIE L. BLISS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cooking Utensils, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to cooking utensils to be used in connection with a stove, range, or other similar device and Which may be used whether a fire is in the stove or not.
My device is so constructed and arranged that when a lire is kindled in it and the utensil is properly disposed on the stove thesmoke, gases, and other products of combustion will be carried downwardly into the stove or range and thus up the chimney, thus avoiding the objections arising when these products escape into the room.
The object of my invention is to produce a device of the character above referred to which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in cost of manufacture, light and convenient, and so constructed that the parts which are subjected to the greatest heat are formed of heavy material, While the parts which are not subjected to thegreater heat are1 constructed of lighter and thinner materia My object is further to produce a device of the character herein described having advantages superior to those heretofore known.
My invention consists in the construction and arrangement herein set forth, whereby the objects of my invention are obtained.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device adapted to be used as an ordinary range or stove, it being elliptical in shape, so as to fill the entire opening when both lids and the intermediate piece are removed. Fig. i? is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. et is a perspective of a gridiron to be used with the device. Fig. 5 is a plan view of my device, circular in shape. Fig. 6 is a perspective of the same, and Fig. 7 is a perspective of the gridiron for the same.
Serial No. 64c2,894. (No model.)
In detail o indicates the bottom or basket portion of the device; ZJ, the upper portion, formed of sheet metal; c, the cover; d and e, gridirons or grates adapted to fit the device; j", a flange extending around the upper portion of the base, and 7i air-inlet openings in the cover.
In the construction of my device the basket or base portion a is formed of cast metal of sufficient Weight to withstand the heat to Which it maybe subjected. The curved side Walls are formed with a series of openings o', and in the bottom are also formed openings o2 to provide ample means for creating the requisite draft.
The cast-metal portion ci of the device is provided With an annular flange f, projecting on a horizontal plane, this flange f being constructed to project in the elongated device a greater distance at the sides than at the ends, so as to fully cover the central portion of the opening in the stove-cover When all the lids are removed. The gridirons are shaped to fit Within the sheet-metal portion b and rest withtheir legs i' on the cast-metal piece. Lugs j are formed on the upper face of said cast-metal part to maintain each section or part of the gridiron in proper position and also so that one section or part of the gridiron may be used alone, if desired, While the other portion of the device maybe used Without the gridiron, if desired. The handles are formed integral with the cast-metal portion.
As the upper portion of the device is not subjected to destructible degrees of heat, it greatly Iightens and renders the utensil more convenient by constructing this portion of sheet metal. I therefore make the upper part of a strip or plate of sheet metal, the side walls of Which extend vertically from the iiange f of the cast-metal basket, meeting or standing upon the flange f at a point or line about central of the dange, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings, thus leaving a ledge or flange g on ,the inner portion of the flange f for the gridiron to rest upon. The base of the sheet-metal portion is then bent outward and horizontally, as at f', and then turned down and around and under the edge of the flange f, as at f2, except at the places Where the handles project, thus securely fastening the sheet-metal part to the cast-metal part IOO The cover is then placed in position, and as the draft from the stove is' upwardlyy to the chimney the air will be drawn in through the air-inlet openings h in the cover, thus sup plying a sufficient quantity of oxygen forthey purposes of combustion. When the charcoal has become sufliciently incandescent, the
cover is removed and the cooking appliances employed, and as the draft continues to bev downwardly, While the heat is radiated upwardly, all thefulnes, smoke, and gases are carried down through the openings in the cast-metal basket into the stove and thus to the chimney.
Having therefore described my invention,`
what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The improved cooking utensil herein described, comprising a cast-metal basket or lower portion formed with a plurality of openings in its sides and an annular outwardlyextending edge flange at its top, a sheet-metal upper portion having its base resting een trally on the annular flange of the cast-inetal part and secured thereto by being bent outward to yrest onfsaid flange and then down and under the saine, and a gridiron formed to set on the inner edge of the annular flange inside of the sheet-metal base.
2. The improved cooking utensil herein described, comprising a cast-metal basket or lower part formed with a plurality of openings in its sides `and an annular outwardlyextending edge flange at its top, a sheetinetal upperportion having its base resting centrally on the annular flange of the cast-metal part and secured thereto by being bent outward to rest on SaidV flange and then down and under the same, and a two-part gridiron formed to set on the inner` edge of the annular flange inside the sheet-metal base, and cover the basket.
