UNITED STATES PATENT I OFFICE PERCY E. DOWE, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
PRINTERS CHASE-TRANSPQRTATION CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 418,507, dated December 31, 1889.
Application filed September 26, 1889. Serial No. 825,126. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY E. DOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, inthe county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have .invented new and useful Improvements in Printers Chase-Transportation Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
In obtaining electrotypes of printing or type forms it is usual forprinters to deliver the chase containing the type to the electrotyper, who reproduces the molding required for the electrotype and returns the chase with the type therein. It frequently occurs that the movements or vibrations incident to transportation of the chase pi the type or cause some of them to slide out of the set position, which obviously is a source of considerable annoyance, delay, trouble, and expense.
The object of my invention is to avoid the foregoing objection by providing a novel, simple, efficient, and economical case or carrier, which holds the chase and type-form so firmly that the movements or vibrations of the case incident to transportation cannot pi the type.
To such end my invention consists in a carrier for printers chases and the type locked therein, composed of a movable lid, imperforate front, rear, side, and bottom walls immovably and rigidly connected together, and a central partition extending from side wall to side wall parallel to the front and rear walls and dividing the carrier into two coequal chambers closed by the imperforate and rigidly-connected front, rear, side, and bottom Walls, and which are of the same dimensions as the'chases and the type locked therein, each side wall of a chamber havinga vertical groove to receive an edge of the chase, and which, in conjunction with the movable lid, the partition, and the front, rear, side, and bottom walls, hold the chase and type from movement in any direction In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now de-' wood, or any other material suitable for the conditions required. The case is provided with a central partition 5, extending from the top to the bottom of the case and dividing it into two similar chambers, each having the same dimensions as thechase and the type locked therein, which are to be transported between the printer and the electrotyper. The sides of each chamber are provided with two opposite parallel grooves or ways 6, running continuously from the extreme top edge of the side walls to the bottom wall for receiving the edges of the chase containing the locked type in such manner that the chase when slid into the grooves or Ways of one chamber will be rigidly held by the walls of the grooves or ways, the partition, and one Wall of the case,
while the endsof the type locked in the case will be in close proximity to or bear against the partition and a Wall of the case, thereby preventing endwise sliding of the type. To avoid injury to the type, I line the opposite faces of the partition 5 with a layer or sheet 7,- of felt, or rubber, or any other soft and flexible material. The lid 4 is fiat, and when closed rests'directly on the case and bears against the edge of the chase or chases therein, and by means described the chases and type are held in a stationary position relative to the carrier or case, so that the movements or vibrations of the latter incident to transportation will not pi the type or cause them to slide out of set position. The lid 4 is provided with a hasp 8 to engage a staple 9 for locking the carrier or case when closed but obviously other locking devices can be employed.
The carriers or cases are made of varying sizes to accommodate the different sizes of chases used by the printer for type-forms that are to be elect-rotyped and may be provided with suitable handles for convenience in transportation.
The construction shown and described provides a simple and economical carrier for transporting printers type-forms locked in chases between the printer and the electrotyper, so that the movements incident thereto cannot pi the type or slide them from correct position. The flexible linings protect the type-faces from injury during transportation and render the carrier perfectly safe for the purposes stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A carrier for printers chases, consisting of the movable lid, the imperforate front, rear, side, and bottom walls innnovably and rigidly connected together, and a central partition extending from sidewall to side wall parallel to the front and rear walls and dividing the carrier into two coeqnal chambers closed by the imperforate and rigidly-united front, rear, side, and bottom walls, which chambers are of the same dimensions as the chases and the type locked therein, each side wail of a chamber having a vertical groove to receive an edge of the chase, which grooves, in conjunction with the movable lid, the partition, and the front, rear, side, and bottom walls, hold the chases and the type locked therein from movement in any direction, substantially as described.
2. A printers chase-transportation case or carrier comprising a movablelid, imperforate front and rear walls immovably and rigidly connected together, and a central partition dividing the case into two chambers, which are of the same dimensions as the chases and type-forms to be carried, said partition having on each of its surfaces a lining of felt or other soft and yielding material, and the sides of the case or carrier provided with opposite parallel grooves or ways to receive the edges of the chases, which grooves, in connection with the partition and the walls of the case, hold the chases and type-forms stationary, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have atfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
