UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ULYSSES s. e. PEOPLES AND onARLEsF. WALTHER, or BALTIMORE,

. GAL.LEY-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,918, dated July 15, 1902.
Application flied December 17,1901. Serial No. 86,244. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ULYSSES S. G. PEO-v i which the following is a specification.
- therein.
This invention relatesto galley-locks, and
is an improvement particularly in. the construction of galley-lock for which we obtained Letters Patent of the United States No. 677,693, dated July 2, 1901.
The invention consists in certain improved constructions, arrangements, and combinations of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved galley with a number of type-bars locked Fig. 2 is a top perspective view of the galley without the sidestick or type-bars. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view, partly in section, of the open end of the galley.
Ou-r patent referred to discloses a printers galley-lock provided with one closed end and one open end and two side bars, one of which is beveled from 'top' to bottom on its inner wall, whereby to produce a greater width across the galley at the top of said side bars than at the bottom, in combination with a beveled sidestick adapted to abut against said beveled side-bar wall and wedge downwardly between'it and the type resting on the bottom of the galley.
The particular object of this invention is to provide means whereby the sidestick will preventthe lastline of type or the last type-bar in the galley from toppling over.
The type-galley A herein shown is like the one disclosed'in our Patent No. 677,693 in that it is provided with a fiat bottom 11, a transverse end barf, forming one closed end, and two side bars a a, of which the lock-up side bar a is beveled or inclined from top to bottom on its inner wall 6 throughout its length, whereby to produce a greater width bars than at the bottom, and the sidestick B is also in this instance like the one disclosed in said patent in that its wall 0, which abuts against the beveled wall b of the side bar a, is beveled parallel to such wall, so that when said sidestick is inserted with a wedge action down between the ends of the type or the type-bars h, as the case may be, in the galley and the beveled side-bar wallit will by its wedge action lock up the said type or typebars. Furthermore, the sidestickB is made so that it is capable of being flexed or of yielding in a'lateral direction, for a purpose hereinafter described.
In addition to its beveled wall 17 the lockup side bar a, is provided near the open end of the galley with a longitudinally-extending recess or socket d, opening inwardly for a portion of its length through the -said beveled wall, as shown at d, and a yielding presser O is secured in said socket and protrudes through the opening 01 into the galley. This presser in the present instance has a member e doubled back on itself and secured in the socket.
0 of the sidestickB enables the lower edge of the stick to pass the protruding end of the presser device.
While the accompanying drawings and description disclose a sidestick having one wall beveled, yet it is to'be understood that the present invention is not limited to such construction, and it is also to be understood that various changes in theconstruction and arran gement of the presser device may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
' 50 of the galley across at the top of the two side While the sidestick Bis described as being laterally flexible, it is to be understood that it is only of such flexibility as the bars used for sidesticks generally have.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a printers type-galley; asidestick adapted to wedge downwardly between one side bar of the galley and the type in the latter; and a presser device adapted to act inwardly against said sidestick at the open end of the galley whereby said sidestick will exert a greater pressure on the last line of type in the galley than on other lines, and will prevent said last line from toppling over.
2. The combination of a printers typegalley having a closed end and an open end, and provided on the inner wall of its lock-up side bar and at its open end with an inwardly-acting presser device; and a sidestick one end only of which is adapted to be acted on by said presser device, whereby the last line of type in the galley is prevented from toppling over.
3. A galley-lock, comprising a galley; a yielding presser device secured to, one side bar of the galley at the open end thereof; and
a sidestick adapted to have one end flexed by said presser device.
4. A galley-lock, comprising a galley; a sidestick adapted to wedge downwardly between one side bar of said galley and the type in the latter; and a presser secured in said side bar at the open end of the galley and adapted to press against the adjacent end only of said wedging sidestick.
5. A galley-lock, comprising a galley provided with one closed end and one open end and two side bars, one of said side bars being beveled from top to bottom on its inner wall and provided with a socket opening inwardly through said beveled wall; a presser secured in said socket and protruding through said wall; and a beveled sidestick adapted to abut against the beveled wall of said side bar and wedge downwardly between it and the type in the galley, and adapted to be pressed inwardly at one end by said presser.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
