To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that l, FREDERICK W. BRnvcKMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county et Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Quoins, ot which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to printing, and more particularly to printers chase turniture, and has for its object to provide a means 'l'or locking Aforms in a chase without danger oi special adjustments being disturbed.

Another object is to provide a quoin by the use ol which it will be possible to unlock a form and maire corrections therein and again lock the form to exactly the same adjustment as before, so that the undcrlay or overlay in the maire ready will register with the type as at first adjusted.

Another object is to provide a quoin having these advantages, which will involve but slight change in the process oi' manufacture now in use with the usual type o'l' quoin.

Another object is to provide a quoin which may be operated to lock a 'form by the same means new in general use.

@ther objects and advantages will be apparent from the `following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims, and that ani suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit ci the invention.

ln the drawings forming a portion oi this specification, and in which lilre numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several ffiews, Figure 1 is a top view oi' the quoin, Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view el the quoin showing the locking means in engaged position, Fig. 3 is a side view of the quoin, Fig. 4. is a cross sectional view similar to Fig. 2 showing the locking means in disengaged position.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a quoin approximately ol' the i'orm now generally in use, comprising two oppositely disposed members 10 and 11 ol' wedge shape longitudinally, having recessed ratchet portions 12 on their adjacent faces adapted i'or coengagement therewith oi a key member of the usual type, and each having a longitudinally extending rib 13 centrally ol' the adjacent laces and arranged ier sliding engagement in a groove 14 formed at the thick end ci each section upon rotation of the key. The ratchet laces 12 extend only over a portion oi the length ol' the sections, and at their thiclrer ends there is a head portion 2G, having the above mentioned groove 14 'formed in the inner side thereof. At the opposite or tapered end of the sections, there are iianges 21 extending laterally on each side oi the rib i3 above mentioned.

A laterally extending slot ..3 is formed in the top oi the head portion of one oi the sections, and has pivoted therein a dog 2e. arranged to project outwardly el the slot on either side ci the section. The dog is provided with an upwardlyr projecting finger engaging portion 25 adjacent to its iree end, said projection being arranged. to extend downwardly over the outer tace oi the sec tion 10 at times. The adjacent flange por tion 21 ol the opposite section is provided with a series ot transv rsely extending recesses or channels 25 'formed in its upper lace, being arranged to register successively with the slot 23 in the head 2G upon sliding movement of the sections 10 and 1i with relation to each other. The slots 25 are arranged to receive the dog 24; downwardly therein to lock the sections against displacement longitudinally oi each other. rl`he slots are flared upward y to facilitate the engagement of the dog therein as shown, the intervening portions forming a series oi ribs or projections serving to etiectively engage the dog 24.

A quoin comprising oppositely disposed wedge shaped sections of the usual type and having opposed rack laces for the engagement therebetween of a key for sliding movement of the sections with relation to each other when the ley is rotated, one of said sections provided with a series ol spaced transverse recesses forming ribs in its upper lace at its pointed end outwardly el the rack faces and extending horizontally when in operative position, the other ol' said sections having a single transverse recess formed therein adapted to register' successively with said rst named recesses upon relative sliding movement oi the sections, and a bar member pivoted in said last named recess arranged -for oscillation to lie with its outer located l portion disposed longitudinally in any of said first named recesses and adapted to be thrown out of such position at other times.

A qnoin comprising wedge sections having opposed ratchet feces, one of said sections having a series of spaced transverse recesses extending horizontally in its upper face when in operative position, the other of said sections having a bar member pivoted thereon and adapted for oscillation to eX- tend over the adjacent section end to lie with its outer end portion disposed longitudinalbT in any or" said recesses to loci; the sections against relative movement.

A quoin Comprising oppositely disposed wedge sections having in combination oposed ratchet faces a series of s aced transverse channels therebetween and extending horizontally on the upperside of the quoin oted in the groove and adapted for oseilla-- tion to extend longitudinally into said channels for locking engagement therewith.
