Description
' (-No Model.) I r P. ROSS. APPARATUS FOR SECURING TYPE 0R MATTER 1N PRINTERS GALLEYS.
No. 531,568. A Patented Dec. 25, 1894. A
51585 cd.. "emu-mo, WASHINGTON c UNITED STATES PATENT Ormcn FRANK Ross, on LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO THOMAS WHITE SMITH,
' or SAME PLACE.
V APPARATUS ,FOR SECURING TYPE OR MATTER lN PRINTERS GALLEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,568, dated December 25, 1894. Application filed July 16,1894. Serial No. 517,709- (No model.) Patented in England Qctober 13, 1893, No. 19,265.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK Ross, a subject of the Queen of Great-Britain, residing at 63 Ballance Road, Homerton, in the city 5 of London, England, have invented new, and
useful Improvements in Apparatus for Se- -curing Type or Matter in Printers Galleys, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 19,265, dated October 13, 1893,) of which the following is a specification.
The invention is designed to facilitate the operation of securingtemporarily the type, or assembled printing surfaces, in printers galleys and to avoid the necessity for the use of quoins and side sticks for the purpose.
The invention consists, in a printers galley of the construction and combination of normally inseparable interlocking sliding parts having inclined shaped. meeting edges, with intervening springbetween the meeting faces, as will be described; also in the construction and combination of normally inseparable interlocking sliding parts having inclined.
shaped meeting edges, as will be described; also, in a printers galley for securing type therein, the combination of. a series of looking devices each consisting of an inclined faced plate, normallyaffixed to the galley, 0 and interlocked by grooves and projections to andcapable of co-operation with a sliding reversely inclined faced plate, with interposed spring as will be'described.
In the drawings Figure 1 shows aplan view of a portion of a printers galley with my invention applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 1-1 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows an under side view of the invention, and Fig. 4. shows in detail a spring to be described.
Figs. 5 and 6 show plan views of the plates the part b next the types and the interposed furniture, while to prevent any interference with the printers composing operations, these parts are made flush with the wall of the gal ley, as shown in Fig. 1.
As soon as the parts to be secured are in position and only a limited space is left, thesliding pieces I) are moved along the faces a. of the fixed plates (1, and the eifect'is that the inclined planes a, 1) cause the slides b to protrude (see dotted position Fig. 1) and they become wedged in between the printers type and the parts a attached to the galley wall A, and all is quickly and securelylocked together sufficiently for transport.
A small hole g, or it may be holes, may be 7 5 made in the slide b to facilitate introduction of any tool to enable the slide to be more readily forced along.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,
I declare that what I claim is- 1. In a printers galley, the combination of two blocks having their adjacent faces reversely inclined and provided with interlock- 8 5 ing L shaped projections, and an expansion spring interposed between said projections and exerting a constant pressure to force said blocks together, substantially as described.
2. In a printers galley, the combination of the block a inserted in one of the side walls of the galley and grooved upon its under side as at c, the plate a secured to the inner side of said block and projecting down in front =of said grooved portion, the block I) provided 5 at its lower edge with an inwardly and upweirdly projecting lip d interlocking with the ROSS, have hereun to set my hand this 2d day groove and plate on the block a, the adjacent of July, 189%. faces of said blocks being reversely inclined,
andan expansion spring 6 interposed between FRANK ROSS 5 the plate a and lip d, substantially as shown Witnesses:
and described. FREDERICK CHIPP,
In testimony whereof I, the said FRANK GERALD F. BIRD.
