RUBBER TYPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 768,981, dated August 30, 1904. Application filed April 27, 1903. Serial No. 154,520. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
vide a type which can be easily moved to its proper position in a holder and which will engage the holder with sufiicient friction to prevent accidental displacement after being properly set.
My present invention can be embodied with the style of type covered by Letters Patent No. 656, 1&2, dated August 21, 1900, or with any other style of rubber type adapted to be arranged in a holder; but I have chosen to illustrate the invention in connection with the patented type aforesaid and the type-holder (iovered by Patent No. 656,443 of the same c ate.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 illustratesa form made of said patented type not embodying this invention and set up in said patented holder in the manner heretofore practiced. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a single type embodying my invention. Fig. 3 shows a logotype embodying the invention. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through a holder containing a form made with my improved type. Fig. 5 shows a straight-sided type embodying the invention. r
The type-holders 12 have been made of shee metal cut and stamped into proper form with one or more type-grooves 11. The type have been made of about the same width as the groove, so that they can be easily set up in the groove. To secure the type properly in place in the holder, slugs or blank-faced type 9 have been set in the groove at each end of the line, as shown in Fig. 1. These slugs are made wider than the type, so that they will become firmly wedged in the groove and hold the type in place, and for this reason more care and labor is required to set them up properly.
To avoid the necessity for the employment of slugs or separate means for securing the type in the grooves and to cause type to fit snugly and sufficiently tight in the holder, while at the same time permitting them to be set up and adjusted freely, I provide a protuberance 13 on the front or back of the type with a frictional engaging face ofless Width than the front or back to engage the holder with suificient friction to hold the type against accidental movement after it has been set in position. This protuberance may be of any suitable form and preferably extends lengthwise in the direction of the height of the type and within the edges of the front or back on which it is located and varies in height between its ends. When the invention is embodied in my patented type aforesaid, I prefer to locate the protuberance above the ofliset 14 to engage the inwardly-project'- ing side 15 of the holder. These protuberances do not retard the setting-up operation, but are of su'flicient size to make proper frictional contact with the holder to prevent accidental lateral movement of the type in the groove during the printing operation.
In practice it has been found that rubber type will shrink more or less after they have been made awhile and that the type-grooves vary in width more or less owing to the dies wearing, to the action of the stamping-machine, and to the resiliency of the sheet metal. For these reasons the type sometimes fit loosely in the holder and aline imperfectly; but when they are provided with protuber- 'ances, as described, the ordinary variations inthe width of the type and in the width of the grooves become immaterial, as the protuberances will always present sufficent frictional engaging surface with the holder to secure the type in place.
I desire to have it understood that in the consideration of my invention, and especially in the claims, I use the word type to include all forms and sizes of types and logotypes.
Without limiting myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts herein Eli shown and described, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A rubber type provided on its front or back with a protuberance to frictionally engage a type-holder, said frictional engagement not retarding the setting-up operation but being sufiicient to prevent accidental lateral movement of the type after it has been properly set in the holder.
2. A rubber type provided on its front or back with a protuberance having a frictional engaging face of less width than the front or back to engage a type-holder with suflicient friction to prevent accidental lateral movement of the type after it has been properly set in the holder.
3. A rubber type provided on its front or back and located Within the edges thereof With a protuberance to engage a type-holder with sufficient friction to prevent accidental lateral movement of the type after being set up in the holder.
4%. A rubber type provided on its front or back With a protuberance varying in height between its ends.
5. A rubber type provided on its front or back With a protuberance extending length- Wise in the direction of the height of the type and Within its side edges.
6. The combination of a type-holder having an inwardly-projectingside Wall, of a rubber type provided With a protuberance to engage said side Wall With sufficient friction to prevent accidental lateral movement of the type after it has been properly set in the holder.
