CORSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,972, dated November 26, 1889.

Application filed September 19, 1889- Serial No. 324,435. (No model.)

To all whom it may concerm.

Beit known that I, HENRY IV. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to corsets, but more especially to corset-waists and that class of garments to which buttons are secured for the attachment of the nether articles of clothing.

The object of my invention is to prevent the distortion of the waist-by the drag of the garments upheld thereby, and to convey the entire strain from the hip-section of the waist directly to the shoulder-straps, so as to be supported thereby.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is aside elevation of a corset-waist provided with my improvement; and Fig. 2, a detail View of the under arm-sections, and also showing the button-strips between said sections in detached condition.

Similar letters denote like parts in the sev eral figures of the drawings.

A represents a corset-waist, and B one of the shoulder-straps thereof.

C is the strip to which the hip-buttons D are secured, and E are the under arm-sections, Which are stitched to said strip on either side thereof. Superimposed upon the sections E are strips F, which are gore-shaped at the strain are directed toward and sustained by the shoulder-straps without any distortion of the under arm-sections.

I do not wish to be understood as claiming any construction wherein the shoulder-straps are extended down to a point near the bottom of the waist and there stitched to a suitable gore or re-enforce, since my invention pertains to the structure of the under armsections, no special shoulder-strap being required.

I claim In a corset-waist, the combination, with the under arm-sections, of the button-strip and the gore-strips over said sections, the inner edges of said gore-strips being stitched to said sections and buttonstrip, while the bottoms of said strips are stitched to said sections by rows of stitches extending diagonally upward from the button-strip, substantially as set forth.
