V I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM DOIIERTY, OF CLINTON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ORGAN-PEDAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,504, dated November 5, 1889.
Application filed May 21, 1889. Serial No. 311,539. (No model.) Patented in Canada February 18, 1888, No. 28,544.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM DOHERTY, a citizen of Canada, residing at Clinton, in the county of Huron and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Organ Attachments, (for which I have received Letters Patent of the Dominion of Canada, under date of February 18, 1888, No. 28,544;) and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to a pedal attachment for organs; and it has for its object to render the joints of the pedal and adjacent parts dust-proof and mouse and vermin proof, the attachments by their construction and adaptation being practically parts of the organ, thereby avoiding the objectionable ne -cessity, as heretofore experienced, of removing and replacing shields or guards for the purposes stated.
The invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which" Figure 1 is a front elevation of one pedal of an organ with my improvements applied. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the dotted lines 00 a; on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken in the plane indicated by the dotted lines y g on Fig. 2, showing parts of both pedals. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan view of one pedal and attachment with parts broken away; and Fig. 5 is a view of the recessed strip removed.
Referring by letter to the said drawings, A indicates the pedal, which may be of the pattern usually employed and attached to the operating parts in the usual manner.
B indicates a transverse strip, which is rabbeted, as shown, and placed so as to form a tight joint with the nosing at the lower transverse edge of the pedal.
0 indicates raised panels, which are glued or otherwise securely fastened to pedalbrackets D and the center brackets E, forming with the same a rabbet for the purpose of covering the edge of the pedal A.
The front wall of the organ-case is cut junction with the toe-strip, to form a close joint at that point and prevent the ingress of mice, vermin, dust, or the like. The toe strip or piece M is securely fastened to the upper end of the pedals A, either on top of the usual carpet covering or directly upon the pedals themselves.
N indicates a molded nosing, which is secured to the lower edge of the pedals A, and,
together with the rabbeted piece B, forms a close joint, so as to prevent the ingress of Vermin, mice, or dust.
0 indicates a pedal-board, to which the pedal is connected by the hinge-joint P.
By the construction illustrated it will be seen that I have an effective means for excluding from the organ mice, vermin, dust, and the like.
The improvements are neat in appearance, are not liable to get out of order, and may be manufactured and applied to any organ at a trifling expense.
It will also be seen that by scouring out or recessing the strip L the operator may be allowed more room for the toe of his boot, and thereby give him more purchase in moving the pedals.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. An organ having its pedals provided at opposite ends with guards to exclude mice, vermin, and dust, and also having a center bracket and the pedal-brackets provided with a raised panel to exclude mice and dirt from the sides of the panel, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the raised panel, of a pedal, the center bracket, and the pedalbrackets, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with an organ, of the toe-piece secured to the upper end of the ner side of the front wall of the organ-case,
pedal, and the recessed strip secured on the the pedals, the brackets D, and the center inner side of the front wall of the organ, subbracket E, substantially as specified.
stantially as specified. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 5 4. The combination, with the pedal-board, presence of two witnesses.
of the rabbeted strip at the forward edge thereof, the raised panel C, the toe-piece M, WILLIAM DOHERTY. secured to the upper end of the pedal, and Witnesses: the nosing N, secured to the lower end of the WV. N. MANNING,
1o pedal, the recessed "strip L, secured to the in- A. H. MANNING.
