ASH-TRAP.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 471,263, dated March 22, 1892.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BELL, av citizen of the United States, residing at Dennison, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Traps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is an isometrical view. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a view of the back or rear side.

The present invention has relation to ashtraps; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the box, which is preferably formed of cast-iron and in cross-section is substantially of the form of a triangle, except that its `rear side is V-shaped, and is so formed for the purpose hereinafter described.

In use the box A is placed in an opening formed in the hearth directly below the grate, and for the purpose of holding the box A, together with its different attachments, in proper position the flange dis provided, which ange rests upon shoulders or flanges located adjacent to the opening, and in use I prefer to so adjust the iianges c with reference to the hearth that the top or upper face of the iianges a will be iiush with the surrounding hearth. The object and purpose of so locating the flanges ct is to prevent them from offer-ing any resistance when it is desired to sweep dirt into the mouth of the box A.

' The bottom of the box A is inclined downward from its front edge to the bottom or lower edge of the box, and is so formed for the purpose of conveying ashes and other Inaterial to the rear lower edge of the box proper. The upper rear portion of the box A is provided with an inclined ledge b, which is for the purpose of conveying ashes past and over the top of the gravity-door B. The gravity Serial No. LM2665. door or trap B is formed, preferably, of light sheet metal and is hinged at its top or upper side by means of the wire or rod b, around which wire or rod the sheet metal is wrapped, thereby securely attaching the gravity door or trap to said wire or rod.

For the purpose of providingbearing-points for the wire or rod b the arms or lugs c are provided and are attached in any convenient and well-known manner to the box A; or, if desired, these arms or lugs c may be formed integral with the box A. The outer ends of the arms or lugs c are provided with apertures, through which the ends of the wire or rod b pass, thereby forming a hinge for the door or trap B.

For the purpose of causing the gravity door or trap B to close automaticallythe rear edges of the box A are inclined outward from the top to the bottom, as illustrated in Fig. 2. For the purpose of stiffening the gravity-door B its bottom or lower edge is provided with the right-angled portion d, which portion is preferably bentl from the body of the gravity door or trap B.

The top or upper edge of the doorB is properly stiffened by means of bending a part of said door around the wire or rod b. It will be understood that a passage is to be provided direct-ly below the .gravity door or trap B, which leads to an ashreceptacle. It will also be understood that by forming the rear edge or part of the box A V-shaped a space will be formed back of the box A, which will allow the gravity door or trap B to open for the purpose hereinafter described.

By placing the door B in the position illustrated it will be seen that said door will easily open and thereby offer very little resistance to the passage of ashes or other material, and as soon as the ashes have passed said door it will automatically close, thereby cutting off all return of the dust.
