THE NORRIS PET! wI'LmAM n. sHERLook, or CANTON, OHIO.
MILK-PAIL,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 22, 1911.
Patented July 14:, 1914.
Serial No. 628,697.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. SHER- LOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Milk-Pails, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention'relates to milk pails in which a detachable cover or hook is provided.
The objects of the invention are to provide a cover for the pail, while in use or more specifically during the time of milking,
and at the same time to provide means whereby the cover or hood can be easily removed when desired.
A further object is to provide means whereby the cover will be held upon the pail in such a manner that it will not be easily or accidentally displaced.
These objects, together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art, I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention may be embodied in a variety of other mechanical forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one of the clips showing the relative position of the cover and pail.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the pail proper which is of the ordinary construction.
2 represents the detachable hood or cover which is substantially of the form shown in the drawing, and is so formed that its forward portion will present a vertical or substantially vertical opening, which opening is located above the top of the pail. For the purpose of providing means for connecting the cover or hood 2 to the pail and holding the same in proper relative position the hood or cover 2 is provided with the flange 3, which flange is so arranged that it will come upon the inner face of the pail as illustrated in the drawings. The cover or hood is also provided with the outer flange 4, which outer flange is provided with a groove formed by bending a portion of the flange 4: as illustrated at 5 Fig. 3 and the flange 3 seated in the open groove, thereby connecting the flanges 3 and t together. The flange 4: is for the double purpose of assisting in holding the cover against relative movement with reference to the pail and at the same timle preventing any dirt from entering the For the purpose of holding the cover upon the pail 1 in such a manner that it will not be easily detached or accidentally displaced, but at the same time can be easily and quickly removed when desired, the spring clips 6 are provided, which spring clips are so arranged that they will embrace the bead 7 formed upon the top of the pail 1. The rear portion of the cover 2 is provided with the hook 8, which hook is for the purpose of engaging the bead 7 and constitutes what might be termed a temporary hinge. The purpose of the hook 8 is to assist in holding the cover 2 or more specifically adjusting the cover when the hook is brought under the bead 7. WVhen the front portion of the hood 2 is slightly elevated or inclined backward, the cover can be brought down and into its relative position at which time the spring clips 6 snap over the bead 7, thereby holding the cover or hood 2 upon the pail 1 in such a manner that it will not be liable to become detached or accidentally displaced during the time the pail is in use.
Having fully described by invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As an improved article of manufacture,
a milk pail consisting of the combination of a pail provided with a bead at its upper end, a detachable hood provided with downward extending spaced flanges, the inner flange of said flanges adapted for contact with the inner surface of the pail and the other of said spaced flanges adapted to lie over and upon the bead of the pail, said last mentioned flange provided with a groove adapted to fit the bead upon the upper end of the pail,
spring clips secured to the hood and adapt- In testimony that I claim the above, I have ed for engagement with the bead and a hook hereunto subscribed my name in the preslocated at the rear portion of said hood and ence of two witnesses.
adapted for contact with the bead of the WILLIAM E. SHERLOCK, 5 pail, said hook having a downward and 'out- Witnesses-z V V J I ward extension normally spaced from the SYLVIA BOROU,
body of the pail. F. W. BOND.
