SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,4 I1, dated November 6, 1900.

To all. whom, it may concern:
Be it known thatI, I-IIRAM T. BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Closet Seats and Lids; and Ideclare the followingto be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto wh-ichit pertail'is to makeand usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This-invention relates to seats for waterclosets, and has for its object an improved seat and lid therefor so arranged that the seat. is entirely open at the front part, leaving the upper edge of the bowl beneath it exposed, and the opening is closed by a downward-extending lip on the lid when the lid is closed over the seat.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows in plan the seat with the lid thereon, the inner line of the seat being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the seat and lid. Fig. 3 is a perspective.
The seat proper is made preferably from wood, eitherfroin a single piece orfrom builtup laminre and in shape may be compared to an enlarged horseshoe. It is entirely inclosed at the rear and is open at the front for a space of two or three inches.
A indicates such a seat, to which is arranged proper hinge connection a at the rear. At the front, between the ends Z7 and c of the seat,is an opening.
B indicates the lid, also properly supplied with suitable hinge connection (I, of a shape to conform to and cover the opening in the seat, and provided at its forward end with a downward-eXtendin g lip e, which reaches to the plane, or approximately to the plane, of the lower face of the seat A. The lip 6 may be made integral with the body of the lid B or in a separate piece therefrom, as maybe most convenient. It is arranged to close the opening which would otherwise be found between the ends I) and c of the seat and underneath the lid when closed.
A seat made of wood and in the form herein described is very much less liable to injury from exposure to moisture than a seat which is closed both at the front and rear. As is well known, such seats are manufactured originally from well-dried wood and when first manufactured are perfect, having no open joints or seams; but as soon as exposed in a place where there is water close at hand, and where the atmosphere is more or less saturated with moisture at all times, the seat will absorb moisture and swell and under varying conditions will shrin k and swell again changing constantly, and if there be joints and seams these will open, and hitherto there has been no practical way of preventing such action. In the open-front seat herein described the construction allows the wood to expand and contract without opeuing any seam, and consequently the seat herein described does not become filled with cracks or open seams liable to absorb moisture and dirt.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of an open-front or horseshoe-shaped seat and a lid provided with a lip adapted to close into the opening between the arms of the seat, substantially as described.
2. The combination of an open-front or horseshoe-shaped seat, and a lid provided with a lip arranged to close into the opening between the arms of the seat behind the extreme front ends of said arms and to extend to the plane of the lower face of said seat, substantially as described.
The combination of an open-front or horseshoe-sl'laped seat,and a lid shaped to conform to and cover the opening in the seat and provided at its forward end with a lip arranged to extend to the plane of the lower face of the seat and to close the opening between the ends of the seat, substantially as described.
