WILLIAM J. FRYER, oF NEW YORK, N. Y.
WATER-CLOSET.
SPECIFICATION forming Ypart of Letters Patent No. 532,656, dated January 15, 1895.
Application tiled October 31,1892. Serial No. L150,4:351 (No model.)
v To @ZZ whom/tt may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. FRYER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and countyof New York, in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement Relating to Water-Closets, of which the following is a specification.v
I have discovered an improved form ofthe parts. Instead of making the rim or top of the bowl in a plane, as usual, I form it high at the back, low at each side, a little higher1 at each side of the front and still higher in the middle of the front. When, as is the case with many forms of water-closet, it is desired to have the water passage extend quite around the interior of the rim, I cause the water passage to be correspondingly undulated. The same effect as usual is produced with such water passage by making the numerous holesor a continuous narrow opening in the bottom thereof through which a thin sheet of water is discharged to wash the entire interior of the bowl,
The seat may be` of wood, or analogous easily cleanable material which is a good non-conductor of heat. Instead of making it plane, as usual,'I form it undulated to correspond approximately to the rim of the bowl.
I provide a slop safe and cover correspondingly curved.
The improvement may be applied with all the ordinary constructions of bowls and all .the ordinary arrangements of the operating mechanism. There may be a cover to close down over the seat when desired.
The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and represent what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section from front to rear, showing the upper portion'of the bowl with the seat in position for use. Fig. 2 is a corresponding plan view, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of a portion on the line 3-3 in Figs. l and 2. Fig. 4: is a vertical section of a portion showing a modiication.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures where they appear.
A is a bowl, certain parts being designated,
when necessary, by super-numerals, as'A. It is provided with an internal lip or casing extending around on the inside of the top, formed integral with the bowl, and provided with an ordinary water connection W to supply water to wash the interior of the bowl. The rim or upper edge of the bowl and the lip instead of being in a plane are, curved, as shown in the figures, the back A of the bowl being high, the sides and a considerable portion ofthe front being low,but the sides being lowest, and the central portion A2 of the front being high. of the front should be about equal to that at the back.A The front, except at and near the center, may be about one inch lowerl than the back. The sides may be one-and-a-half inches lower than the back.
The seat is marked B. It may be of soft mahogany, or other suitable wood, hinged as usual at the back edge. Certain portions of the seat are designated, when necessary, by super-numerals. B is the high portion at the back and B2 the high portion at the center of the front. The remainder of the seat is low. The form of the under face of Ithe seat B, B', B2, corresponds to the upper edge of the bowl. The upper face is smoothly curved. It may be produced by removing portions of the wood from a sufficiently thick plane piece, or it may be produced by bending and holding until cold a thoroughly steamed board. The lid D, hinged alittle farther back, as usual, isadapted to serve the usualmfuncf tions of a cover by completely covering the whole, when lowered. It should be similarly curved or it may be made with angular forms approximating to the curve of the seat. I have shown both conditions. f
My improvement provides a seat whichis comfortable for both sexes and for all ordinary variations in size and form. When used by persons who are ill, orl careless from any cause, it reduces the risk that any urine shall be thrown over the front of either the bowl or seata E is a slop safe, of cast or wrought iron of sufficient thickness, provided with a low rim E on its upper face at the outer edge, and enameled on-its whole upper surface. It is The height at the center I IOO curved to correspond to the top of the bowl. It lies between the bowl and the seat in the same manner as the ordinary plane safe lies, but curved to adapt it to the curved form of the bowl rii'n and seat. The slop sai-'e serves its usual functions in arresting and leading into the bowl any water which may be thrown thereon. The high back performs an iinportant duty in decreasing the risk of soiling that portion of the seat under any circnin stances.
Modifica tions may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of the invention. The cover may be plane, With a hanging rim at the front and sides properly formed to make a close joint with the seat. Such is outlined in Fig. 4.
The slop safe E may be omitted and the scat allowed to match down close to or even to touch the rim of the bowl if preferred in any case.
I claim as my invention- In a Water-closet, in combination with the water connection W, and bowl A, having its rim waved, and provided with a correspondingly waved internal lip for distributing the water, a slop safe E, inclined inward and having a raised rim E and a raised back, and a seat B and cover D, all correspondingly waved, and arranged for joint operation, substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the invention above set forth I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WM. J. FRYER.
