FRANK IB. SHAFER, OF NORTHVILLE, MICHIGAN, ASSIG-NOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,

' CHEMICAL-CLOSET.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 15, 1920.
Application filed. February 28, 1917. Serial No. 151,574.
I/Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chemical-Closets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction of chemical closet having certain advantages, as hereinafter set forth.
In' the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view;
Fig. 2 is a section through a portion of Fig. 1.
A is a sheet metal cylindrical body, which at its upper and lower ends is reinforced by metallic rings B and B of angle section and preferably formed of cast metal. The upper ring B has preferably formed integral therewith, inwardly-extending lugs C for engaging with the beaded upper edge D of a detachable pail or receptacle E. F is a bracket, preferably of cast metal and preferably of a Z-section, said bracket being secured to the outwardly-extending flange of the ring B and pro'ecting upward and outward therefrom. is a seat member and H the cover member, both of which are hinged to the bracket F, the pivot pin of the hinge being arranged in the plane of the upper flange of the Z-bar. This simplifies the construction of the hinge, which has three sections I, I and I respectively connected to said upper flange of the Z bar, the top'of the seat and the top of the cover. The construction also provides clearance for the thickness of the seat between the plane of the pivot of the hinge and the plane of the ring B on which theseat rests. J is a gasket of rubber tubing or other packing material, engaging an annular groove in the lower 7 face of the seat and resting upon the ring B. K is a similar gasket in a groove in the cover, for resting on the seat G. a
The receptacle is ventilated by a tube L which is secured to a flanged nipple M attached to the cylindrical casing A. The tube L may be connected with a chimney flue or other vent. The detachable receptacleE is provided with a bail handle N which is adapted to fold beneath the plane of the seat. The receptacle is also provided with a series of apertures 0 around the rear side thereof slightly below the bead D, said apertures providing a vent from the inner re-v ceptacle to the vent tube L.
What I claim as-my invention is:
The combination with a cylindrical sheet metal casing having reinforcing rings at the bottom and top thereof, of lugs extending inward from said upper ring, an inner receptacle having a beaded upper edge supported on said lugs, a seat and a cover hinged to the upper ring of said casing, and
a vent tube connected to said casing below said upper ring.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANK B. SHAFER.
