UNITED STATES PATENT DANIEL DOW'D, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
THRESHOLD.
SPECIFICATIO forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,382, dated November 5, 1889. Application filed April 9, 1889 Serial No. 306,507. (No model.)
features herenafter described and claimed.v
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a perspective view of my improved threshold. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing it extended; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal Vertical section.
My improved threshold consists of two sections or members A B, the end of the section B overlapping the end of section A, as clearly shown. The inner end of the section A is provided with a longitudinal slot O, and a bolt or screw D, secured in the sec-- tion B, extends downward through the said slot C and is provided on its lower end with a nut, which is adapted to be turned up against the under side of the lsection A to hold the two Sections or members together when they have been adjusted to the desired point. The section A is provided in its upper side, near its inner end, with a recess E, which is substantially V-shaped, and the inner end of the section B is extended in a tapered point F, which is adapted to engage and fit in the said recess. By this construction when the two Sections are extended the upper surface of the threshold is inaintained at a uniform height, so as to prevent an open space being formed below the door through which cold air may enter the room. The upper surface of the threshold is further provided with a series of grooves G, by which any water that might collect on the threshold can be led off.
In practice the Sections or members of the threshold are adjusted upon each other until the threshold is of a proper length to lit the doorway. The Sections are then secured in their adj usted position by turning home the nut on the lower end of the bolt D, after which the threshold is secured in place in any suitable manner.
It Will be seen from the foregoing description that I have provided a threshold which is simple in its construction and can be readily adjusted to any doorway. By the use of my device when the threshold has become worn it can be removed and a new one substituted Very easily, which could not be done with the old solid threshold.
Having thus described my invent-ion, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,-is-
1. A threshold comprising two Sections or members having their ends overlapping and adj ustably secu red together, one of said members having a recess in its upper side, and the other member having an extended point engaging said 1'ecess,las set forth.
2. The improved threshold herein described and shown, consisting of the section A, having a horizontal V-shaped recess in its upper side, and the section B, adj ustably secured to the section A and having a tapered point at its end engaging the V-shaped recess in the section A, as specifiedl In testirnony that I claim the foregoing as niy own 1 have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL DOWD.
