Description

W. W. ALBRIGHT.
DOOR CHECK.
APPLICATION FILED OCT 27, 1919.

wuemtoz I ffllmlfirzyizl $1 z t E UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WARREN WALTON ALBRIGHT, OF COLUMBIANA, ALABAMA.
DOOR-CHECK.
Application filed October 27, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN W. AL- BRIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbiana, in the county of Shelby and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in door checks.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a door check which is adjustable, so that it may be employed with doors which are either close to, or far from the floor, the means for adjusting the door check also serving to secure it in effectix e position against the floor.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is exceedingly simple in construction, yet highly efficient in use, one which is strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,--
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec tion, of a device constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation.
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred example of my invention, the numeral 1 indicates a one-piece tapered block composed either from wood or metal which is provided on its underside with teeth 2 which bite into the floor and prevent slipping of the block. The block is notched at its wide end as indicated at 3 to provide upper and lower spaced lugs 4 and 5, the purpose of which will hereinafter be set forth. The block is further provided with a longitudinal split 6 which opens into the notch to render the block Specification of Letters Patent.

resilient. In order to adjust the block I provide a thumb-screw 7 which may be of any suitable construction. This screw extends through and has threaded engagement with the upper lug 4 and, as it bears against the lower lug 5, it will be seen that when it is rotated, the lugs 4 and 5 will be moved away from each other, thereby spreading this end of the block. It is to be noted that the set screw 7 not only serves to expand the block but it also serves to drive the teeth 2 into the floor.
With a device of this construction it will be seen that it may be effectively used to prevent opening a door when it is unlocked. This is particularly advantageous when it is desired to leave the door slightly open during warm weather. In other words, the door may be left open slightly when this check is in position and yet prevent the entrance of burglars. In this way air may pass through the room and yet there need be no fear of a person entering the door from the outside.
In applying the device beneath the door it is only necessary to place the narrow end beneath the lower edge of the door, and by proper adjustment of the device it will be wedged tightly between the bottom of the door and the floor and at the same time the teeth 2 will be embedded in the floor and prevent any possibility of the device slipping from beneath the door.
Having thus described my what I claim is:
A door check comprising a one piece tapcred block having a plurality of integral laterally disposed teeth on its lower side, said block being notched at its wide end to provide upper and lower spaced lugs, the block being further provided with a longitudinal split, opening into said notch to render the blocks resilient, and a thumbscrew extending through and having threaded engagement with the upper lug, its end bearing on the upper face of the lower lug serving to spread said lugs, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
WARREN WALTON ALBRIGHT.
