July 1, 1958 8 V M. MAY 2,840,868
THRESHOLD Filed May 6, 1955 2 Sheets-Sheet 1 INVENT OR MAURICE MAY BY fi-MJ, M, y w
ATTORNEYS July 1, 1958 M. MAY 2,840,868
, THRESHOLD Filed May 6. 1955 r 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 IS/I/ MAURICE MAY 'ITORNEYQ United States atent ee 3 Claims. (Cl. 20-44) This invention relates to thresholds, and more particularly to a threshold for a door having a door check mounted in a recess in the floor below the door.
It is an object of this invention to provide a new and improved threshold made up of readily separable parts but which nevertheless has a unitary and homogeneous appearance when said parts are assembled together.
It is another object of this invention to provide a threshold including a section adapted to overlie a door check in which the. complete threshold may be assembled in a unitary structure before being placed in the doorway.
It is still another object of this invention to provide a threshold assembly adapted to overlie a door check in which a section of the threshold may be easily re moved to permit adjustment of the door check.
In achievement of these objectives, there is provided in accordance with an embodiment of this invention a threshold assembly preferably formed of extruded metal such as aluminum and including a main section which extends longitudinally between the oppositely disposed doorjambs and a second section adapted to overlie the door'check and extending longitudinally in abutting relation to the main section for a portion of the length of the main section. The abutting edges of the main section and of the second section are provided with complementary bevels which permit the two sections to interfit in a smooth homogeneous arrangement. The nonabutting edges ofthe main section and of the second section are alsobeveled and perpendicularly disposed edgesof the two sections meet'in a mitered joint. The
threshold is provided with an aperture through which the spindle of the door. check extends for connection to the door.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a threshold assembly in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a view in transverse section along line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view in transverse section along line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged plan view of the threshold assembly adjacent the door check end of the assembly; and
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the two sections of the threshold assembly separated from each other, with the main section being shown in fragmentary plan view.
Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Fig. l, the threshold assembly of the invention is shown extending longitudinally between two oppositely disposed door jambs and 12. The assembly includes a main section generally indicated at 14 and a second section generally indicated at 15 which extends laterally from and along a portion of the length of main section 14 in abutting relation thereto as shown in the drawings. Both sections 14 and 15 are preferably formed of an extruded metal such as aluminum.
Main section 14 is of arched cross-section and has a 2,840,868 Patented July 1 1958 flat top face 16 having longitudinally extending grooves 13 formed therein. Main section 14 also includes oppositely disposed longitudinally extending beveled edges 20 and 22. Beveled edge 20 terminates in a short vertical edge portion 24 which extends downwardly to the floor level for the entire length of main section 14. Beveled edge 22, which is disposed toward second section,15, is also provided with a vertical edge portion 26 which extends to the floor level for the portion of the lengthof main section 14 which does not abut section 15. Where sections 14 and 15 abut, edge portion 24 terminates above the floor level and flush with the underneath surface of section 15 as indicated at 28 in Fig. 2.
Flat face 16 of main section 14 and also beveled edge 2% which is disposed away from section 15 both extend between the facing inner sides 33 and 34 of the respecchannel portions 30 and 32 of the respective door jambs it and 12.
Beveled edge 22 of the main section extends lengthwise beyond flat face 16 of section 14 in the region of door jamb 12 and abuts side 36 of door jamb 12 as indicated at 38. The opposite end of the. beveled edge 22 terminates in longitudinally spaced relation inwardly of door jamb 10 to provide an open or cut-away portion indicated at as in Fig. 5 which is adapted to cooperate with an opening 42 of the second section 15 to define an aperture for the passage of a spindle on. the. door check. Beveled edge 22 of main section 14 is also provided with a semicircular cut-away portion 44 intermediate the portion thereof which abuts second section 15 to facilitate the adjustment of certain types. of door checks which may be used with the threshold assembly of the invention.
The second section 15 is adapted to overlie the door check and extends laterally from and in abutting relation to main section 14. Section 15 extends longitudinally beyond the main section to abut side '35 'of door jamb it? and into flush relation with side 41 of jamb 10. Section 15 is of substantially solid plate-like construction and includes a flat upper face lb-provided with longitudinally extending grooves 43 similar to the grooves 18 of main section 14.
Section 15 includes a longitudinally extending beveled edge 5% on its underneath surface which is adapted to complement the beveled surface 22 of main section 14. When section 15 is positioned in abutting relation to main section 14 with the underneath beveled edge of section 15 in superposed abutting relation to the beveled edge 22 of main section 14, upper flat face 46 of section 15 lies in the same horizontal plane as upper fiat face 16 of main section 14. 1
Section 15 is provided with an outwardly disposed longitudinally extending beveled edge 52 which extends for the entire length of section 15 and which is mitered at 56 to a laterally extending beveled edge 54 at the inner end of section 15. The opposite end of beveled edge 54 of section 15 abuts beveled edge 22 of section 14- in a miter joint 57.
Main section 14 and second section 15 may be assembled together prior to placing the assembly in the doorway by placing a machine screw through the mating apertures 58 and 60 of main section 14 and of second section 15. The assembly may then be placed in the doorway between the oppositely disposed door jambs 1d and 12. When the assembly has been positioned between the door jams, the assembly may then be secured to the door check casing which is disposed in a in main section 14 and into suitable bolt-receiving means in the floor.
If it is desired to adjust the door check, section 15 may be removed to give access to the door check by removing the bolts in apertures 62 and 64 which secure the threshold assembly to the door check casing and also by removing the boltwhich passes through the aligned apertures 58 and 60 of main section 14 and of second section 15.
It can be seen from the foregoing that there is provided in accordance with this invention a threshold assembly for use with doors of the type having door checks mounted in a recess below the floor. The threshold assembly of the invention is relatively simple in construction and requires a minimum number of parts as compared to previous threshold constructions for this purpose. The two parts constituting the threshold assembly may be assembled together prior to positioning of the threshold in the doorway and the assembly may then be easily placed in position in the doorway. Furthermore, the threshold assembly hereinbefore described is so constructed as to permit easy adjustment of the door check when desired.
While there has been shown and described a particular embodiment of the invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the invention, and therefore, it is aimed to cover all such changes and modifications as fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention.
