WAGO N-SEAT FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 413,530, dated October 22, 1889.
Application filed September 6, 1889- Serial No. 323,180. (No model.) i
the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a section of a wagonseat and of a portion of a wagon box embodying my improved seat-fastener, said fastener being shown in perspective; and Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the parts detached.
This invention relates to wagon-seat fast eners, and has for its object to construct an improved device of this class which shall be self-locking, compact, and strong. I accomplish this object by the novel construction and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both the figures.
The letter A designates the side piece of an ordinary wagon-box, having a rail B, on which rests the seat-riser C. To the rail B is fixed by three screws, no two of which are in the same horizontal line, a keeper D. This keeper has two inwardly-projecting ears, forming a groove a, and an outwardly-proj ecting lip 17. It will be seen that the keeper D bulges inward, leaving a space or chamber between the upper portion, from which the ears project and the rail. This chamber is partly covered by the lip Z). The upper side of this lip is fiat and level, while the under side is arc-shaped in longitudinal section, and has a beveled surface 0, so that it is thicker at the inner than at the outer edge. On the seat-riser is fulcrumed a cam-lever E, which has a beveled flange increasing in thickness from the edge to the flat plate, which rests against the riser, and also increases in thickness from the point 01 to the handle e. The cam-lever is fulcrumed under a segmental casing F, fastened to the seat-riser a little above its lower edge, and has a rectangular finger f, adapted to slide into the groove a, and thus keep the seat from sliding back or forward. When this finger is placed in the groove a, the weight of the handle e will cause the cam-lever to turn and its flange will pass under the lip 19,: and as this flange is beveled and thickened toward the handle, and as the casing F and lever E are fastened a little above the edge of the riser, it is evident that by pressing the handle down or allowing it to fall the seat will be firmly fastened. It is also evident that the jarring of the wagon will only tend to make the heavy handle e fall, and thus all liability of the cam-lever getting out from under the lip and the seat becoming loosened is obviated; and as the under side of the lip b is beveled, and also the flange of the camlever, they will hold the finger firmly in the groove and prevent all rattling.
It will be seen that my fastener is compact and strong; that there are no hooks to catch when putting things under the wagon-seat, or to be bent or broken when the seat is removed and thrown around the yard or barnfloor, as is often the case. By the arrangement of screws by which the parts are fixed to the rail and riserI obtain a substantial fastening and avoid splitting the wood by placing the screws out of line with each other.
I am aware that prior to my invention seatfasteners have been made with a staple and circular-hook having a weighted handle. I do not therefore claim such a construction, broadly; but
WVhat I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
