To (LZZ whom it iii/cry concern: Be it known that 1, JOHN KITSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey (Jity,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sewing-MachineOover Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to the hooks or studs ot' the cover and the catch devices of the table, by which the back of the cover is secured to the table preparatory to the fastening of the front of the cover by the lock and key; and it consists of a construction of the catch devices of the table to extend slightly above the surface of the table, and an arrangement of the studs of the cover whereby they do not project below the bottom edge of the cover, suitably for adapting the studs and the catches for interlocking and fastening the cover without any projecting part or portion of the coverstnds below the cover, thus protecting the table from the scratching to whichitisnowsubjcct by the employment of the fastenings in I present use, which consist of cover-studs projecting below the edge of the cover and engaging with catches titted in flush with the surface of the table, which studs bruise and scratch the table whenever the cover is placed on the table in any other position, except when the studs enter the catches, which is very frequently done.

My invention also comprises a contrivance of the catches which project above the surface to avoid the catching of the goods by them, and I employ pads of leather or other like material in the lower edge of the cover to cushion the cover on. the table and prevent the scratching of the table by the cover itself, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the cover inverted and having the studs for fastening the back edge of the table contrived in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the tai ble having the catches for securing the cover as I prefer to arrange them. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2 on line .1; Fig. 4 is a section of Fi 2 on line y 'y. Fig. 5 is a perspective a view of a portion of the table, representing modified forms of the latches. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of aportion of a cover, show in g modified forms of the cover attachments that may be used with the catches of Fig. 5; and Fig.7 represents a modified form of the catches of Fig. 2.

Theinvention consists, essentially, of hookcatches on the table a, projecting above the surface of the same and contrived to beckonto studs or into eyelets of the cover I), the ob- 6o jcct being to utilize these devices for securing the cover at the base of the same in a manner by which the bruising and scratching of the table by the studs of the fastenin g now in use, which project below the edge of the cover, will be avoided.

The form of the catches and studs may be varied somewhat as I have represented them in the drawings for instance, the catches d and a, made of disks of thin sheet metal with O a part, f, struck up suitably to receive the studs 5/ of the cover, and being in such oval form that the goods being worked in the machine will glide over them without catching, will be preferred, the margins of the disks being set in the table flush with the surface, and aft'ording the means of securing them to the table with screws, and the studs g on the covor being plain flat strips fastened to the edge of the cover in recesses 72 and the cover hav- 80 ing recesses 2', in the lower edge, which close over and conceal the catches, or nearly so, when the cover is secured in position; but the oval catches d 0 maybe formed on or attached to the end of a wood-screw, as in Fig. '7, to be 3 attached to the cover by screwing into the table.

' The catches may, if preferred, consist of hook-headed nails or screws 1" or 3', driven or screwed into the table, as in Fig. 5, with bushed 9o sockets formed in theinside of the cover I),

as in Fig. 6 but I prefer the oval-head catches (Z or c and the studs g.

I propose to use the ordinary lock 1 and catch for the front side of the cover, with my 9 5 improved fastening for the back, and will cushion the bottom of the cover with elastic pads 11., of leather or other improved material, to protect the surface of the table from being bruised and scratched by it. These pads may w -ing, as in Figs. 5 and 6, but this may also be be connected by pressing them tightly into holes bored in the lower edge of the cover at the corners or elsewhere, or may be otherwise secured.

For the catches d e and studs 9 I prefer the arrangement shown, in which the studs 5/ are made to enter the catches by pushing the cover from the front of the table backward, but the arrangement may be in the reverse thereof, to make the connection by shifting the cover forward, which is the preferable arrangement for the contrivance of the fastencontrived to shift from the frontbackward, as preferred.

Having thus described my invention, what Icla im, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

1. The combination, with a sewing-machine table having hoolccatches for the back of the cover projecting above its surface, of a cover having studs or equivalent fastenings located above itslower edge, and arranged and adapted to engage said catches by a backward or forward movement of the cover with the back edge of the cover resting on the table, substantially as described.

2. The co1nbination,with a sewing machine table having catches with oval heads f, projecting above its surface, of a cover having studs g, located above the lower edge of the cover and adapted to engage said catches above the surface of the table, substantially as described.

3. The combination, with asewing-Inachine table having catches with oval headsf, projecting above its surface, of a cover having studs g, located above the lower edge of the cover and adapted to engage said catches above the surface of the table, said cover also having recesses i, adapted to close over the catches substantially as described.
