FREDERICK VAN PATTEN, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
SPRING HARROW TOOTH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,865, dated October 15, 1889.
Application filed April 19, 1889. Serial No. 307,776. (No model.)
To aZZ whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK VAN PAT- TEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Spring Harrow-Tooth, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in spring harrow-teeth; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eificicnt device by which the tooth will be securely fastened to the beam.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a spring harrow'toot-h provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail crosssection.
The beam A and the tooth B are of the usual or any preferred construction. The holder C consists of a curved plate having one end turned over the edge of the beam A, as shown, and then riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the beam, and it is provided at its edges with the longitudinal ribs or flanges E, which bear against the side edges of the tooth and prevent the same twisting in the holder. The holder is somewhat elongated and curved, so to fit snugly on the tooth and present a large bearing-surface thereto. The ribs or flanges E are extended or widened somewhat at about their centers, as shown at F, and these widened portions are perforated, so as to receive the journals of a clamping-plate G. The said clamping-plate is pivoted between these widened portions by having its journals engaged in perforations therein, and it is adapted to bear against the tooth and bind it against the holder. The clamping-plate is provided with an integral journal H at one end, and its other end is journaled by having a pivot-screw or removable journal I inserted through the perforation in the widened portion F into the clamping-plate. The clampin g-plate is further provided with a bearing J, in which a set-screw K is mounted, and the said set-screw is adapted to bear against the tooth.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that 'I have provided a very simple and efficient device by which the tooth will be effectually secured, and by which it may be readily adjusted so as to out to a greater or My device is very simple, and its advantages are thought to be obvious without a detailed reference thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the beam, the curved tooth-holder secured thereto and having ribs or flanges E at its side edges, provided with the widened portions F, the tooth fitting in the holder, the clamping-plate adapted to bear on the tooth and having an integral journal engaging one of the widened portions F, and the removable journal inserted through the other one of the widened portions F into the clamping-plate, as set forth.
2. The tooth-holder having as a fixed part thereof a pivoted clamping-plate provided with a set-screw, as set forth.
3. The tooth-holder having as a fixed part thereof a pivoted clamping-plate having one of its journals removable, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK VAN PATTEN. Witnesses:
