Description

W. L. BARTON. Plow.
No. 222,980. Patented Dec. 30, 1 879 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. BARTON, OF BUTLER, KENTUCKY.
. IMPROVEMENT iN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 222,980, dated December 30, 1879; application filed August 4, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. BARTON, of Butler, in the county of Pendleton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referen ce being had to the aocompanyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to reversible plows; and it consists in certainimprovements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the beam, to which is secured the upward and downward projecting standard-plate B, to the ends of which the right and left hand plows O D are attached in any suitable manner.
The lower ends of the handles E E are connected by a ring, F, forming a box or bearing for the rear end of the beam, which is turned down to form a spindle, S, by which it is journaled therein. Another bearing, G, for a stud, H, upon the rear end of the beam, is formed between arms or brackets I I, extending downwardly from the handles.
J is a hook, formed at the converging front ends of two rods, K K, extending forwardly from the handles, to which they are secured. Said rods should be sufficiently elastic to retain the proper position of the hook; or they may be hinged to the handles, so as to make the hook adjustable.
The land-sides L of the plows are provided upon. their inner sides with staples M M, adapted to engage hook J, thereby securing the plows in proper position for operation, and also forming braces which aid in holding the device rigidly in position when properly ad justed for operation.
The clevis N, at the front end of the plowbeam, is provided with a swiveled tug-link, O, for attachment of the draft.
From the foregoing description, and by reference to the drawings hereto annexed, the operation of my invention will be readily understood.
By releasing the hook J the beam A may be turned in its bearings, thus presenting either the right or left hand plow for work, as may be required. The swiveled tug-link 0 permits the beam to be turned without detaching the horses.
The construction is simple, and the device may be easily and conveniently handled.
I am aware that a rotating beam carrying a right and a left hand plow is not new, and such I do not claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the handles E E, having rods K K, converging at their front ends and forming a hook, J, of the rotating beam A, having double standard B, carrying plows G D, the land-sides of which are provided upon their inner sides with staples M M, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto set my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. BARTON.
Witnesses R. W. YELTON, M. H. MCGINETY.
