Description

No. s||,4ss. Patented Sept. 27, was.

CULTIVATOB ATTACHMENT.
(Application filed June 16, 1898.)
(No Model.)
I CZJ CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WARREN, OF CHUNKEYS STATION,- MISSISSIPPI.
ill I cu LTIVATOR ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 611,463, dated September 2'7, 1898.
Application filed June 16, 1898. Serial No. 683,607. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER COLUM- BUS WARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chunkeys Station, in the county of Newton and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cul tivator Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cultivator attachments, and pertains to an attachment whereby a single-toothed cultivator may be converted into a three-toothed right or left hand side cultivator, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple improved attachment for the ordinary sin gle-toothed cultivator-stock whereby it can be converted into a three-toothed side harrow, the attachment being so constructed that a reversal thereof will enable the attachment to convert the cultivator into either a right or a left hand side cultivator, the construction being simple, cheap, and easy of attachment and adjustment.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sin gle-toothed cultivator with my attachment applied thereto, converting the same into a three-toothed right-handside cultivator. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it used for converting the single-toothed cultivator into a left-hand-side cultivator. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of the attachment. Fig. 4. is a detached perspective view of one of the attachment-teeth.
Referring now to the drawings, A indicates the stock or standard of a single-toothed cultivator or plow, which is connected to. the beam in any desired manner.
B represents my attachment, which is a horizontal bar approximately Z-shaped in plan view, provided with a central opening a, through which a bolt passes, the bolt adapted to be passed through the stock or standard A, whereby the said bar is adapted to be connected to the cultivator-stock. It will be noted that by having an attachment Z-shaped in horizontal plan view one end of the attachment projects forward and the other rearward. To opposite ends of this bar B are attached the upper ends of the teeth D. These teeth are twisted intermediate their ends half-way round, as shown at 1), whereby they are adapted to rest flat against either the inner or outer sides (preferably the outer side) of the ends of the bar B, as clearly illustrated. The ends of the bar are provided with transverse openings and the upper ends of the teeth with registering transverse openings through which the clamping-bolts f are passed and whereby the teeth are adapted to be attached to and detached from the said bar.
Attention is called to the fact that the extremities of the bar 13 are turned laterally, (preferably outward,).which provides proj ecting lips h, and the upper ends of the teeth are also turned laterally, as shown at '11, and project over and engage the upper surface of the ends of the Z-shaped bar, also clearly illustrated. By means of this construction the teeth are bolted firmly against any pivotal or lateral movement by means of a single clamping-bolt, as will be readily understood, thus producing a cheap and simple way of connecting the teeth and holding them rigidly in place.
The twist of the teeth provides a wing or flaring surface, which serves to turn the soil in the plowing or cultivating operation.
When it is desired to convert a singletoothed cultivator into a right or a left hand cultivator, it is only necessary to bolt this attachment to the stock. Should it then be desired to change this from a right to a left hand side cultivator, it is only necessary to detach the bar, turn the bar over, and detach and reverse the teeth and a right or aleft hand cultivator is produced, as may be desired by the operator.
This attachment is simple and cheap of construction and very effective in result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- V The combination with a cultivator and its standard and tooth, of the detachable and reversible Z-shaped barat its central portion secured to the standard and having the laterally-bent end flanges or lips, and the teeth secured to the ends of the bar and held by said lips and having the bent ends engaging the top edge of said bar.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS WARREN. Witnesses:
EUGENE CARLETON, J W. GALLAsPY.
