L. N, FRYMIRE 8v P. S. DERR. 'BNVELUPR No. 412,325. Patented Oct. 8, 1889.
LOU. NICELY FRYMIRE AND FULLER PATENT OFFICE.
SHANAFELT DEER, OF WATSONTOVVN,
PENNSYLVANIA.
ENvE
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application led October 16 1888 T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that We, LOU. NICELY FRYMIRE and FULLER SHANAFELT DEER, citizens of the United States, residing at Vv-Tatsontown, in the count-y of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Envelopes, of which the following is a specification.
This invent-ion relates to improvements in envelopes; and it consists in a certain-novel construction and combination of devices fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
The object of the invention is to provide an envelope that can be used a number of times for the same or similar purposes-as, for instance, in correspondence between the employer and employsin railroad companies, express companies, and other corporations Where the communications do not passthrough the United States mails.
The device is more fully described hereinafter in connection With the drawings, Wherein- Figure l is a view of the face of an envelope embodying; our improvements. Fig. 2 is a view of the rear of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central sectional view of the same. Fig. 4 is a View of the envelope in which a diierent and simpler form of clip or fastener is einplOyed. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the disk.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the envelope, of any preferred or ordinary shape and composed of any suitable materiahwhich is provided at its open end With a covering-flap B, having a tongue C, which enters a transverse slit D in the rear side of the envelope.
.An opening or aperture E is formed in the face or front side of the envelope at a convenient point, and F is a rotary diskgvhich is centrally pivoted to the inner side of the face or front of the envelope in such a position that a portion of its surface is exposed through the opening or aperture E. The face of the said disk is divided into a number of sections f f, either of which may be arranged opposite the opening in the face of the envelope, and the LOPE.
Patent No. 412,325, dated 0ctober 8, 1889.
. Serial No. 288,212. (No model.)
which the envelope is to be delivered is placed in one of the sections. It Will be evident that the naines and addresses of a number of persons may be placed on the disk, and any desired section may be exposed. The disk is further provided near its edge With a peripheral series of perforations G G, in which are fitted eyelets g g io prevent the perforations becoming Worn by continued use, and the face of the envelope is provided near its open end with asimilar perforation H, in which is titted an eyelet h, and either of the perforatious of the disk may be aligned with the perforation H. A similar perforation I is formed in the flap B in alignment with the perforation H, and in it is fitted an eyelet fi.
K represents a pliable clip, hook, or fastening, which is pivoted to the face ot' the envelope and is adapted to be inserted at its free end through the registering perforations G H- I and turned down on the rear side of the flap in order to lock the` flap in its closed position and prevent rotation of the disk. To open the envelope, the free end of the said clip, hook, or fastening is straightened and Withdrawn from the registering perforations, after which the rotary disk may be turned to bring any desired address before the opening in the face of the envelope.
The eyelet L, which forms the pivot of the clip, hook, or fastening, as shown in the drawings, Figs. l to 3.
Fig. 4 shows a simpler forni of clip or fastening which may be used, if preferred 5 and it consists merely of a paper clip of the ordinary construction, Which is passed through Ythe registering perforations in the same manner as the free end of the fastening shown in the other iigures.
The face of the envelope may be provided, if preferred, with the name of the company or corporation using the envelope, the division of the road (if itis a railroad) upon which it is used, and the name of the oiiicial to which it is to be sent-as Freight Agent, Pasn senger Agent, the.
Our invention may be applied to an envelope having a side iiap instead of an end naine or the address (or both) of the party to flap, as Will be obvious.
disk, also preferably forms the pivot of the Having thus described the invention, We claim- 1. The combination, with an envelope provided with an opening in its side, of the address-disk arranged Within the envelope and having a portion of its surface opposite, so as to be exposed through the said opening, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with an envelope provided With an opening E in its side, of the rotary disk pivoted to the inner side ofthe envelope and having its surface divided into sections adapted to be successively exposed through the said opening, substantially as described. l
3. The combination of the envelope provided wit-h an opening E, the disk pivoted Within the envelope and provided With a series of perforations, and the clip, hook, or fastening engagingone of the said perforations and a corresponding perforation in the Side of the envelope, substantially as specied.
4. The combination, with the envelope provided in its face with the opening E and with a perforation H near its open end, the flap B, covering said end and provided With the opening I, registering with the opening H, the disk F, pivoted, as at L, and provided with a series of perforations G, adapted to align With LOU. NICLY FRYMIRE. FULLER SHANAFELT DERR.
