UNITED STATES PATENT FFIOE.
JOSEPH OLOVVES, OF BEDFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN E'NVELO PES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,032, dated January 8, 1878 application filed October 16, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, JOSEPH GLoWEs, of
trouble, expense, and annoyance consequent upon the accidental falling off or separation of postage stamps from envelopes, and yet at the same time enable their being detached by the postmaster, to serve as vouchers.
The invention consists in forming the postage-stamp in one piece with the envelope in such a manner that the larger portion of the stamp is left free, and the remainder connected with the flap of the envelope directly, or by a neck, enabling its being detached Without demolishin g the envelope.
The accompanying drawings represent three modiiications of this my invention, Figure 1 showing the front or superscription side of the envelope 5 Fig. 2, the back of the same, open, and Fig. 8, the back of the same, sealed.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A isthe envelope 5 B, the iiap, gummed7 011 the edge at a for sealing. C is the postagestamp, made in one piece with the envelope A, and connected thereto by a neck, D.
I propose to water-line the valuation in the stamp, besides using diiferent colors to denote different values.
The neck D may be made long enough to enable the stamp to be exposed on the same side with the superscription, as shown in Fig.
l, thus enabling the postmaster to observe it without turning the letter; or it may be con"- nected to the iiap B by a narrow and short neck, as in Fig. 2 or the length of the neck may be only the thickness of a line, punctured, as in Fig. 3, for separation. The latter construction may be preferable. The stamp may then, after canceling by puncturing or otherwise, be left attached to the envelope, or itmay be detached by the postmaster, and kept as a voucher, its separation from the liap B not in any Way injuring either the' envelope or the sealing thereof.
I am aware of the existence of a combined letter-sheet and envelope, which has a flap capable of being foldedl over onto the address side of the envelope, said iiap having the'ordinary postage-stamp secured to its face, and being itself secured to the envelope by mucilage.
In my invention the postage-stamp is an unguinmed extension of the ordinary sealing-Hap of the envelope, and is attached thereto in such a manner that it can be readily removed when desired.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The letter-envelope having an unguinmed postage-stamp formed in one piece with the sealing-flap thereof, and attached thereto bya narrow neck, so as to be readily detached, as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPH OLOWES.
