UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SANFORD R. HASKELL, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
UMBRELLA-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,521, dated September 24,. 1889.
Application filed January 7, 1885.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SANFORD R. HASKELL, of the city and county of Albany, in the State of New York, have invent-edcertain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for holding umbrellas, &c.; and the object of my improvements is to provide a device for the purpose named, which, (device,) when not in use for holding wet umbrellas, may be turned aside, so that it will occupy only a trifling space in the apartment where it is placed. This object I attain by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device attached to a wall and with the several parts in position for use; Fig. 2, a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, a horizontal section of the detachable drip-cup, and Figs. 4 and 5 enlarged and detached detail views of the hinge-joint for the swinging bracket.
As represented in the drawings, A is a swinging bracket, made of metal and provided with any required number of circular openings for containing umbrellas. Said openings 1 preferably form of conjoining rings a, of sufficient size for containing one or more umbrellas. The said rings are attached to a rearwardly-extending stem a, provided at each side with lateral pintles a and a B is a hinge-piece adapted to be secured against a wall, door, or other vertical part of a room. Said hinge-piece is provided at its lower end with inwardly-projecting flanges of uniform thickness, formed of reversed curves to produce the convex projecting'portions 1) and b and the intermediate concave portion 11 Between the inner edges of said flanges there is an opening 12 through which the stem a of the swinging bracket A passes, so that the pintles a will bear against the outer faces and the pintles a will bear against the inner faces of the flanges of the hinge-piece B.
hen the hinge-piece B is secured in place, as shown in Fig. l, and the swinging bracket A is projected to receive umbrellas, &c., the
Serial No. 152,187. (No model.)
pintles a will rest against the under side of the flanges at the portion marked 1), and the pintles a will lie in the concave portion 19 of said flanges, and the swinging bracketAwill thus be sustained in its extended position. To drop the swinging bracket A into the hanging position shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 2, the outer end of said bracket must first be swung upward, using the pintle a as a pivotal center, so as to carry the pintle a against the under side of the flange at the portion 1), and then, by using the pintle a as a pivotal center, the outer end of the swinging bracket may be swung downward to bring the pintle a to the under side of the hinge-piece B, as shown by the dotted lines, exhibiting the pendent position of the bracket in Fig. 5.
The detachable drip-cup C is provided with a dovetailed tenon c, that is adapted to engage in a counterpart dovetail piece D, which .is designed to be secured to a wall or other similar vertical part of the room, underneath the swinging bracket A, so that the said dripcup will serve as a receptacle for catching the drainage from wet umbrellas.
Then not required for use, the swinging bracket A may be turned down into its pendent position, and the drip-cup C may be re- So moved from the dovetail piece D and put out of the way.
I do not confine myself tothe exact tastening herein shown and described for attaching the drip-cup C in a fixed position beneath the swinging bracket A, as many different fastenings that differ only in a slight degree may be adopted for effecting the same purpose.
I claim as my invention- In an umbrella-holder, the combination, with a swinging bracket A, provided with the lateral pintles a and a herein described, of the hinge-piece B, provided with ihwardly-projecting flanges formed of the reversed curves 1), b, and 11 as and for the purpose herein specified.
SANFORD R. HASKELL. lVitnesses:
