Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. BROOK, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lrousers-Elevators, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a device and arrangement thereof in connection with trousers for the purpose of enabling the wearer to elevate the lower end of the legs an inch or so at will and keep them out of the mud.

The improvements will be readily understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the upper portion of a pair of trousers provided with my improved elevating device and arrangement, the device at the left of this view being out of action, leaving that leg of the trousers in normal condition, while the device at the right of this view is in active position holding that leg of the trousers elevated; Fig. 2, a face view of the inside portion of the trousers with my device attached, but in inactive position; Fig. 3, a similar view with the device in operative position; and Fig. 4, a vertical section through the device in the plane of line a of Fig. 3, exhibiting the eye-grooves where the device is attached to the goods.

In the drawings, A indicates the trousers; B, the portion thereof corresponding about with the left hip of the wearer; C, a portion similarly corresponding with the right hip of the wearer; D, two narrow pieces of flexible metal or other suitable material, secured one against each of the inner surfaces B and G of the trousers; E, a similar piece pivoted to the end of each of the pieces D and adapted to be turned up and form an upper prolongation thereof, as in Fig. 3, or to be turned down over the piece D, as in Fig. 2; F, hooklike notches in the edge of the pivoted pieces E, adapted to engage a button when the piece E is turned up, there being in each piece E preferably at least two of these notches; G, buttons upon the inner surface of the trousers near the top thereof, one over each of the pieces D, the distance from the pieces D to the button being such that when the trousers-lcgs are in normal position on the wearer and the pieces E turned up the buttons cannot be reached by any notch of the piece E; II, the left leg of the trousers, appearing in Fig. 1 as in normal position; .I, the right leg of the trousers, appearing in Fig. 1 as elevated by the act-ion of the device; and K transverse grooves in the face of the pieces D, each end of these grooves terminating in perforations through the substance of the pieces D.

The pieces D are sewed in proper position upon the inner surface of the trousers, near the side seam and in the neighborhood of the hip, the attachment being made by sewing through the perforations forming the termi' nals of the grooves K. The threads by which the sewing is done, therefore, lie in the grooves K below the general outer surface of the piece D, and thus permit the turning down of the pieces E without danger to the sewingthreads becoming cut by the shearing-edges of the pieces E.

Under ordinary circumstances the device and arrangement are such as is indicated in Fig. 2 and at the left in Fig. 1. In this condition the leg of the trousers occupies its normal position, and the upper portion of the device is turned down upon the lower one, forming a short double flexible piece whose presence is of no inconvenience to the wearer. In case it is desired that the trousers be shortened or their lower ends drawn up to keep the hems from getting in the mud, the portions E of the device are turned up and the hook-notches engage with the buttons, as indicated in Fig. 3 and at the right-hand portion of Fig. 1. In this position the legs of the trousers are elevated and without wrinkling at the legs, the gathering produced by the device taking place at the upper portion of the trousers, where it is hidden by the skirts of the coat. An elevation of threefourths of an inch or so will be found ample. The device when worn in this position is flexible and causes no inconvenience to the wearer. It is of cheap construction and of easy application and manipulation. Its use will avoid the necessity for turning up the hems of the trousers, and will consequently avoid the wear and misshaping which is incident to such turning up. The use of the device also results in more comfort to the wearer than where the hems are turned up.

Trousers-elevators have been devised to elevate the heels of trousers by means of straps secured to the heels of the trousers and extending upward therefrom to near the Waist, the active operation of these elevat ing-straps causing Wrinkles to occur in the legs of the trousers below the skirt of the coat. I disclaim as of my invention such trousers-elevators.

I claim as my invention 1. In a trousers-elevator, the combination,

substantially as set forth, of strips secured adapted to engage a button.

to the inner surface of the trousers near the side seams thereof, a button over each of said strips, and astrip pivoted to each of said secured strips and provided with notches adapted to engage said buttons.

2. In a trousers-elevator, the combination, substantially as set forth, of perforated strip D, adapted to be secured to goods, andastrip E, pivoted to the end thereof and provided in its edge with one or more notches adapted to engage a button.
