UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD \VILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRUCK-END PLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,030, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed April 4, 1889- Serial No. 5306,04 0. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM MAC- KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Im- 5 provem ent in Truck-End Plates, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in truck-end plates; and it consists of atruckend plate made of pressed steel in the shape shown.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- I Figure 1 represents an end elevation; Fig.
2, a vertical section through the center of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a side elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a view of my truck-end plate in one of the forms in which it may be applied.
The structure consists of a plate of steel approximately box-shaped with an opening through the center, as indicated.
A represents generally the truck-end plate, having'when in position two lower extensions G G, above which the transom channel-bars rest in the completed structure. The central opening 0 has a bent flange E surrounding it, while the exterior of the plate is bent upward into the flange B, as indicated, which again is turned outward into two short flanges at C D, as shown. The sides are provided with bolt-holes F, for the attachment of the transom channel-bars. Practically the structure is corrugated by reason of the flanges shown, thereby increasing its strength. 5
In Fig. 4 the truck-end plate is shown in position in whatis known as the ordinary diamond frame P, showing the transom chann elbars R in position.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire 40 to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A truck end plate made of one piece of pressed steel having a central opening and a flange surrounding the same, and having an exterior flange surrounding the plate, substantially as described.
2. The pressed-steel truck-end plate A, having an opening 0 and flange E surrounding the same, and having an external flange B and flanges D C, bent from said flange B, all made of one piece of pressed steel, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES.
