Description

(No Model.)
E. W. M. HUGHES. BOLSTER BEAM FOR CARS.
No. 408.023. Patented July 30, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD \VILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BOLSTER-BEAM FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,023, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed January 3, 1889.
I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it. known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM MAC- KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bolster-Beams for Cars,of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improved pressedto steel bolster-beam combining great rigidity,
lightness, and durability.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan View of the bol- 5 ster-beam; Fig. 2, a plan view of the bolster beam box, and Fig. 3 a section through the bolster-beam and bolster-beam box. v The beam and box are made of pressed steel, and may be made upon the apparatus for which Samson Fox made application 011 the 18th day of January, 1888, Serial No. 261,166. The end of the bolster-beam box is cut away at C, as shown in Fig. 2, to allow the same to pass through the truck-frames. The
part A is deepest in themiddle, as shown, and
Slopes gradually to the ends, the greatest rigidity being required at the con ter. 3y making the beam in the form shown in Fig. 1 (being an inverted box) I lessen the weight and Serial No. 295,323. (No model.)
make said bolster-beam very rigid. The said 0 B, formed of one piece of metal and having sides and ends integral with the beam-box itself, adapted to receive the same, substantially as described.
3. The pressed-steel bolster-beam box B,
cut away at the end C for passage through the truck-frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES.
