EDIVARD WVILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRUCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,027, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed March 14, 1889.
To all whom it 'ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD IVILLIAM MAC- KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trucks, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved construction of metallic trucks and truck-frames IO for railroad-cars, especially as adapted to sixwheeled cars. The parts herein referred to are generally made of pressed steel.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view; Fig. 2, an outside lateral elevation of the side of the truck-frame; Fig. 3, a section through Fig. l on the line 1) c; Fig. 4, a section through Fig. 1 on the line a: 00; and Fig. 5, a section through Fig. 1 on the line 1 y, or the line ,2 2, Fig. 3.
My truck consists, generally, of the side frames A A, which are formed of double angle-iron of the shape shown, having flanges B and C, as clearly shown in Fig. at. The end pieces D D are hollow boxesfitting over the ends of the side pieces A A. The truck-frame has an additional framing of transverse pieces F F, which have the general form of channelbeams, Fig. 3, and longitudinal pieces E E, preferably box-shaped, as shown in Fig. 3. The channel-beams F F, which may be boxshaped, if desired, rest upon the inside flanges O C, while the pieces E E rest, and are supported within the corresponding boxes F and 3 5 D. The frames for the axle-boxes are strengthened within by having the parts K K folded back, as shown. The two inside brackets P P rest upon the inwardly-projecting flange C, while the two outer ones P P rest upon the upper surface of the cross-beams F. These brackets are for the purpose of carrying the swinging links for the bolster-planks. The

centerplate J'rests upon the arch-beams H H. The ends of these arch-beams are fastened to the transverse beams G G, and the arch-beams are attached thereto by the upper plates L L and the lower plates M M, as shown. The attachment between the center plate J an d its attached portions and the truck-frame may be done in any suitable manner, and is not in- (heated in these drawings. The various parts are fastened together in any well-known way, as, for instance, by bolting or welding.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the side pieces A A, having flanges B and O on alternate sides thereof, with the end boxes D D, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination-of the side pieces A A, having internal flanges C, with the end box D, and the transverse framing F, supported upon the flanges O, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the side pieces A A, having internal flanges C, with the end box D, the transverse framing F, supported upon the flanges G, and the longitudinal beams E E, resting on the flanges of the parts F and D, substantially as described.
4. The side frames having flanges B C, the internal flange 0 being folded back, as at K, substantially as described.
5. The arch-beam connections shown, consisting of the two channel arch-beams H H, and the cross-pieces G G, attached to the beams H H by plates L M, substantially as described.
I11 testimony whereof I have signed my name toithis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES.
