SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,448, dated September 25, 1900.

To all w/wm it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT R. KEITHLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oar-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car-trucks having side frames which are constructed mainly of pressed steel; and the objects of my invention are to provide an improved construction of the compression and tension members of the side frames which combines lightness and strength and to provide a strong and rigid connection between the side frames and the transom.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a car-truck embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing one half of the truck-frame in elevation and the other half in section, the plane of the sectional portion being in line 2 2, Fig. l.

The tension member of each side frame is composed of a flat horizontal bottom plate I), two vertical webs 19, extending upwardly from the edges of said plate, and horizontal flanges b projecting outwardly from the upper edges of said webs, as shown. Each of the compression and tension members is formed from a single plate of pressed steel. The vertical webs of the tension and compression members are preferably constructed of greater depth at their central portion than at their end portions, as shown in Fig. 1.
O is the transom, which connects the side frames and which may consist of a box-girder of any suitable construction. The transom shown in the drawings consists of channelbars having their flanges arranged to face outwardly and top and bottom plates 0 connecting said channel-bars. to the transom by rivets or bolts d, which pass through the lateral flanges a and b of said members and through the top and bottom plates of the transom.
The compression and tension members of each side frame are firmly secured together on opposite sides of the transom by heavy vertical bolts e and on opposite sides of the axleboxes F by similar bolts g. These bolts pass through the top and bottom plates a b of the compression and tension members.
H represents vertical struts arranged between the compression and tension members on opposite sides of the axle-boxes and having enlarged ends or heads h, which bear against the top and bottom plates at b of the side frames. These struts are secured in place by the bolts g; which pass through the heads of the struts.
I represents the usual spiral springs, which are interposed between the top plate of the compression member and the upper side of the axle-boxes and which are embraced on opposite sides by the vertical webs ct of said member.
The particular cross-sectional form of the compression and tension members herein shown and described is practically equivalent to that of two Z-bars arranged face to face and bracing each other. This peculiar crosssection combines the greatest possible lateral strength and stiffness with a maximum vertical strength for a given metal section.
By riveting the lateral flanges a and b of the compression and tension members directly to the top and bottom plates of the transom a connection of maximum strength and stiffness is obtained between the transom and the side frames of the truck, and with the additional strength contributed by the heavy connecting-bolts e and g and the struts H an efficient truck-frame is produced which combines the essential qualities of strength, stiffness, and lightness.
I claim as my invention-- 1. Aside frame for car-trucks havinga tension member, and a compression member connected therewith and composed of a horizontal top plate and vertical webs extending downwardly from the edges of said plate and each provided at its lower edge with an outwardly-extending flange, said top plate, webs and flanges being formed from a single piece of metal, substantially as set forth.
2; Asidefralne forcar-truckshavingacompression member, and a lower tension member connected therewith and composed of a horizontal bottom plate and vertical webs extending upwardly from the edges of said plate and each provided at its upper edge with an outwardly-extending flange, said bottom plate, webs and flanges being formed from a single piece of metal, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the side frame of a truck havingaoompression melnbercomposed of a horizontal top plate and vertical webs depending from the edges of said plate, and each provided at its lower edge with an outwardly-extending flange, and a tension inem HERBERT R. KEITHLEY.
