Description

(No Model E. W. M. HUGHES. TRUCK FOR ROLLING VEHICLES.
No. 408.033. Patented July 30, 1889.
N. PETERS. Phnkrljlhographar. Washinginn, n. c
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD WVILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG'NOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SA'MEPLACE.
TRUCK FOR ROLLING VEHICLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,033, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed June 11, 1889- Serial No. 313,910. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM MAO- KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improve ment in Trucks for Rolling Vehicles, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
This invention relates to an improvement in trucks for rolling vehicles unprovided with end frames and in which the side frames and transom are formed of one piece of pressed steel or other metal.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan View; Fig. 2, a vertical section through the transom, and Fig. 3 ahorizontal sect-ion through Fig. 2 on the I line it 0c.
My truck, as shown, consists of a transom A and side frames B, having pedestals C integral therewith, the whole formed of one piece of pressed steel. A suitable blank is cut and then pressed in the well-known way into the shape indicated, and by reason of the fact that the transom A is integral with the side frames B no end frames are required. By preference I provide a stiffening-plate D, riveted in the open bottom of the transom A and provided with suitable openings for the king-bolt, and also additional openings insuring lightness. The pedestals C are provided with cheek-pieces D riveted thereto and affording additional strength and stiffness at that point.
The center plate F may he of any known kind; but I prefer to make it of pressed steel, as I do likewise the side bearing-plates C.
It will be seen that the side frames and transomare pressed into box shape, both 40 sides of the transom and both sides of the side frames being pressed downward and substantially parallel with each other, so as to form a box-shaped structure, as indicated.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to 4 5 secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A truck-frame for rolling vehicles, having the side frames and transom formed of one piece of metal, which affords the necessary strength and rigidity without the employment of end frames, substantially as described.
2. A truck for rolling vehicles, consisting of the box shaped side frames and transom pressed from a single plate of metal, said transom affording sufficient strength and rigidity without the employment of end frames, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the side frames 13 B, the transom A, and the stiffener D, the said side frames being unprovided with end frames and relying for their support upon the transom A and stiffener D, substantially as described.
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES.
