- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
EDIVARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
TRUCK- SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 408,024, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed January 3, 1889.
T aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD IVILLIAM MAC KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented a new and useful 1111- provement in Truck-Frames, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In the manufacture of truck-frames for moving vehicles, especially truck-frames for railroad-cars, it has been very .difficult to insure the exact rectangulararrangement of the side and end frames, and to continue said rectangular structure when the frame has been made of castings or of hand-wrought material, and in many instances in part of wood. By my improvement I propose to make these frames entirely of pressed steel, in which the parts are made of steel pressed bet-ween dies of such shape as to necessarily insure the rectangular formation when the frames have been put together. This I accomplish by flangin g the side and end frames in such manner that these flanges fitting together necessarily insure the rectangular shape previously referred to. By making these frames of pressed steel, as described, I likewise insure greater uniformity of material, greater lightness, and an increased durability.
My invention will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a view of the bottom of my truck-frame; Fig. 2, a cross-section of the mode of connection of the bolster-beam box and side frame; Fig. an inside view of the side frame; Fig. 4:, an outside view of the same; Fig. 5, a section through the end frame, showin g its method of attachmentto the side frame; and Fig. 6, a section at right angles through Fig. 5.
A and B are the side frames, C and vD the end frames, and F the bolster beam box. These frames A, B, C, and D are substantially box-shaped, having bottoms and sides and rectangular corners adapted to fit into each other, as hereinafter to be described. They are preferably made upon the apparatus for which application has been made by Samson Fox on the 18th day of January, 1888, Serial No.'261,166. The rectangular boxes C andD are arranged to fit over the ends of the side made, these frames generally having been (No model.)
frames A and B, and the flanges of the side frames come in contact, making an accurate fit with the insides of the boxes C and D, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. By simply, therefore, bringing these flanges, which necessarily accurately correspond, being pressed in similar dies, into fitting contact there is made an absolutely rectangular frame. The bolster-beam box having been put in position through its proper openings, as shown in Fig. 4, the side frames are riveted or suitably attached at the corners, (they may be welded,if preferred,) and the bolster-beam box is likewise riveted, making a rigid and accurately rectangular frame.
I do not herein claim theinvention claimed in my companion application, Serial No. 295,322. 0
That I claim as my invention an d desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the pressed-steel flanged side frames A and B and the pressedsteel flanged end frames C and D, the flanges of said frames accurately'fitting against each other, so as to produce an accurately rectangular frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the pressed-steel side frames A and B, having flanges at right angles to their main plane, and the pressedsteel flanged end frames C and D, having their flanges at right angles, fitting accurately the flanges of the side frames A and B, and the whole firmly attached by riveting or welding, so as to insure a rectangular frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the pressed-steel side framesA and B, having flanges at right angles to their main plane, and 'the pressed-steel 9o flanged end frames C and D, having their flanges at right angles, fitting accurately the flanges of the side frames A and B, and the bolster-beam box F, fitting the flanged side frames A and B, the whole firmly attached by 5 riveting-or Welding, so as to insure a rectangular frame, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES.
