SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,311, dated March 23, 1897. A Application filed December 4, 1896. Serial N 1 (N model-l T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented or discovered certain new an d useful Improvements in Car- Trucks, of which improvements the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to that class or typ of car-trucks which have all of their parts or members constructed of metal and are designed more particularly for use in locomotive-tender and freight-car service.
The object of my invention is to provide a truck of this type which shall embody strength, simplicity, and durability and one that can be constructed from metal of standard shapes without subjecting the metal to severe strains incident to fiangin g and bending.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved car-truck frame; Fig. 2, a horizontal transverse section through one 1 of the side frames on the line II II of Fig. 1;
Fig. 0, a plan view of a slightly-modified form of transom, and Fig. 4 a perspective view illustrating a still further modified form of the same.
In the practice of my invention I provide a car-truck having two side frames, each of which is composed of two metal plates 1 and I, which are substantially of an oblong shape, as illustrated in Fig. 1. It is not essential, however, that the upper and lower edges of the plates 1 and 1 be parallel, as the lower portions of said plates may, if so desired, be cut away for the purpose of lightness, as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1. Openings or slots 2 are formed in the plates 1 and 1 near their outer ends for the reception of the axle-boxes, the sides of such slots being adapted to serve as guides and supports for the boxes; but it is preferred, in order to obtain a broader bearin g for the boxes, to insert U-shaped guides 3 in said openings. The guides 3 are provided upon their outer surfaces with central ribs 4, which project between and are clasped by the plates 1 and 1, said guides being securely held in position by means of rivets passing through the plates 1 and l and ribs 4. In order to prevent collapsing of the plates and also to increase their rigidity, distance-pieces 5 are also interposed between the plates 1 and 1 near their central being securely riveted together at this point.
An oblong cap 7 of a length equal to that of the distance between the side frames, and provided with downwardly-proj ectin g side portions 7, rests upon, clasps, and is securely riveted to the transoms 6, the whole forming a rigid connection for the side frames. In order that the transoms 6 may not exert a shearing strain upon the rivets securing them, to the side frames, they are supported upon longitudinal strips 8, riveted to the lower inner edges of the side frames in line with the lower distance-piecos 5, interposed between the plates 1 and 1 of said side frames.
If desired, the transoms may be formed of a single strip 9 of metal bent to a box-like shape, as illustrated in Fig. 3, and provided with a cap 7, similar to that just described. Fig. 4 illustrates a further modified form of transom, having its cap 10 formed integral with the side pieces 11, which are provided with flanges 6, whereby the transoms are secured to the side frames.
