UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDIVARD \VILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FOX SOLID PRESSED STEEL COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED STAKE AN D POCKET FOR CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,028, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed March 14, 1889. Serial No. 303,271. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM MAC- KENZIE HUGHES, of Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented. a new and useful Improvement in Combined Stake and Pocket for Railroad-Cars, of which the following is a full, true, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement in stakes or upright supports used in connection with the sides of cars and it consists in a new and improved construction of such stake, and the combination of such stake with a metal fastening called a pocket.
I 5 My invent-ion will be readily understood from the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 represents an elevation of the supported stake in position; Fig. 2, a lateral elevation of the same, showing the wood-work in section, Fig. 8, a transverse section through the stake shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a transverse section through the locking-staple C, shown in Fig. l.
My stake proper is shown at A, and is a semi-cylindrical flanged piece of metal, as shown, having flanges D D, through which bolts E pass. The lower end of the stake is corrugated at B B. The whole stake is made of pressed steel pressed between suitable dies 0 to the shape shown. The flanges, as shown, are perforated to allow for the passage of a looking or fastening staple bolt C, which passes through the Wood-work of the car, as shown, and is firmly held in position by nuts F F. By the flanged and semi-cylii'ldrical construction shown' I obtain strength and lightness and a convenient means of fastening the Wood-work to the stake, and at the same time by the corrugations shown the stake can be firmly locked in position by a 40 single locking-piece.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stake for railroad-cars, made of one piece of pressed steel and having a semi-cylindrical central part, and two flat flanges on either side thereof for supporting the Woodwork of the car, substantially as described.
2. The stake for railroad-cars herein shown, made of pressed steel and having corruga- 5o tions B B for supporting a locking device, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the pressed-steel stake A, having flanges D and corrugations B B, with the locking-staple C, substantially as described.
In testimon y whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. o
EDWARD WILLIAM MACKENZIE HUGHES,
IVitnesses:
WM. Voss, W. S. HARTWELL.
