UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN B. CORNELL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WROUGHT-IRON COLUMNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,305, dated February 2, 1875; application filed December 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. CORNELL, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vrought-Iron Posts, Oolumns, Compression Struts and Chords, of which the following is a specification:
Referring to the drawing, Figure l is a crosssection of my improved strut or chord, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of a fragment thereof.
The invention relates to the employment of a T-shaped bar for forming the joint between the vertical ribbed plates composing the chord, the edges of said plates being riveted to the lateral wings or flanges of the bar, as hereinafter described.
The cylindrical strut or chord is formed of the rolled plates to, of segmental form, provided with vertical strengthening-ribs b. The joint between the several plates a is formed by riveting their edges to the lateral flanges of the T-shaped bars 0, as shown.
The joint is therefore an element of strength, and I thus provide a strut or chord of minimum size and weight, and maximum strength.
I do not claim, broadly, constructing a column or analogous device of ribbed plates; but
What I do claim is- The improved strut or chord herein described, formed of the segmental ribbed plates a I) and the T-shaped joint-bars c, the said parts being riveted together in the manner specified.
JOHN B. CORNELL.
