Description
(No Model.) I 7 I. J. W. ADAMS.
PACKAGE HEAD. No. 405.000. Patented June 11, 1889.
WITNESSES: llVl/E/VTOR BY Vam Afro/my N. PETERS, PhnhLlfihograpMr, Washington D. C,
UNIT-ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC J. V. ADAMS, OF LAUREL, DELAWARE.
PAC KAG E- H EAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,000, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed March 5, 1889.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC J. W. ADAMS, of
Laurel, in the county of Sussex and State of Delaware, have invented a new and Improved Package-Head, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the construct-ion of the heads of packages, such as those employed in the transportation of fruit and garden-truck, the object of the invention being to provide a package-head which will not be injuriously affected by changes of temperature or of humidity.
The invention consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a package-head embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
In the drawings, and 11 represent two pairs of slats or strips having curved ends a b, and secured together at right angles to each other by nails 12, that are driven through the slats or strips and clinched, as shown in Fig. 2. The grain of the wood from which the slats or strips are made runs parallel with the length of the said slats or strips, and the combined width of each pair of slats or strips when se- Serial No. 301,925. (No model.)
' cured together isless than the diameter of the package for which the head is intended, so that the ends of each pair of slats will project beyond the sides of the other pair, and thereby form a circular head, having the grain of the wood exposed in its bearing-surface.
By constructing the head as above described I obviate all danger of shrinkage and provide a head which may be subjected to extreme changes of temperature or humidity without any injurious effect.
Although I have spoken of the device forming the subject-matter of this application as a package-head, it will of course be under-- stood that the same might be used as the bottom for a package, such as a barrel or basket.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As a new article of manufacture, a pack age-head consisting of two pairs of slats 10 and 11, having curved ends and secured to gether at right angles to each other, the combined width of each pair of slats when se cured together being less than the diameter of the package for which the head is made, whereby the ends of one pair of slats will project beyond the sides of the other pair and form a circular head having the grain of the wood exposed in its bearing-surface, all substantially as described.
' ISAAC J. W. ADAMS.
