SIYEOOL 0R REEL FOR RIBBONS, co.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EUGENE CARRAINE, aV citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented Vcertain Improvements in Spools or Reels for Ribbons, etc., specication.
The object of my invention is to construct a spool or reel of cardboard or similar material so that it can be cheaply manufactured and yet will be of so substantial a nature as to more than withstand the customary handling to which it is subjected.
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1, is a perspective view of my improved reel; Fig. 2, is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3, is a longitudinal sectional view; Fig. 4, is a plan view of one section of the body portion; Fig. 5, is a detached view of one of the end pieces; Fig. 6, is a perspective view of a modilication of the invention; Fig. 7, is a longitudinal sectional view of the reel shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 8, is a transverse sectional view of the reel shown in Fig. 6; Fig. 9, is a plan view of the blank from which the reel, illustrated in Fig. 6, is made; Figs. ,10 and 10a, are perspective views of the two sections of the body portion ready to be assembled; and Figs. 11, 12, 13, and 14, are views illustrating other modifications of the invention.
A-A are the two cardboard sections, forming the body portion of the reel, each section being made of a single piece of cardboard cut on the outlines shown in Fig. 4, and having end portions aa, which project beyond each end of the body a and the extensions of the end sections are notched at c to a depth equal to the thickness of the cardboard so that when the end sections t are bent on the dotted lines c at right angles to the body portion a, the edge a2 of the one section will abut the edge of the other section, as clearly7 illustrated in Fig. 1. The two sections A. are secured together by paste or other cementiof which the following is a tious material and in order to reinforce the heads of the spool, I provide head sections f B as illustrated in Fig. 5, which are secured to the flanged sections a of the spool by paste or other adhesive material; making a very rigid spool or reel without any projec-V tions or sharpedges on the inner sides of the heads.
In some instances, the spool or reel may be made as illustrated in Figs. 6 to 10 in- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

elusive, in which case A are two body portions secured together back to back and each body portion has a flange a3 projecting at one end only and there is an incision made in the blank atV 02 between the projecting portion and the body of the blank, as illustrated in Fig. 7 so that when the flanges a3 are turned at right angles to the body pore projecting end 0l of one section abuts against the end e of the other section; making a neat and smooth joint.
`- In Fig. 11, I have illustrated a spool made 1n accordance with my invention, without the reinforcing head sections B. This frame can be used when a comparatively inexpensive reel is desired.
In Fig. 12, I have illustrated the head section B made with an open center o. In this form, the punching may be utilized for the head of a smaller spool; the open center of the head, in this instance, giving the strength desired to the head of the spool; making it comparatively light, yet binding the abutting edges of the two body sections.
In Figs. 13 and 14, I have illustrated other modifications in which the body portion A2 has a flange a4 on one side only and the incisions o4 are cut in the blank as indicated; the flanged section being turned at right angles and when the two sections are placed back to back as illustrated in Fig. 14, the ends of the flanged sections a* abut against the plane ends of the flanged sections a5.
It will be understood that while I prefer to make the heads of cardboard, they may be made of wood of any thickness desired. A spool or reel of this type is used particularly for reeling ribbons, laces, edgings and like materials, and it should have sufficient strength to prevent the heads collapsing until after the material is entirely removed from the ree The reel can then be discarded, if desired. i
I claim:
1. The combination in a reel, of two cardboard sections, each section having a body portion and having a flange at each side, the flanges being of greater length than the body portions, the two sections being secured back to back with the flanges projecting at right angles to the body portion in opposite directionsand the protruding edges of the flanges abutting each other.
2. The combination in a reel, of two sections of cardboard, each section having :L body portion and bent at right angles there- Vbody portion and :t flange at each side turned to and the protruding edges of the iianges at right angles to the body portion, each abutting each other; means for securing the iiange extending beyond each end of the body portions of the two sections beek to 5 body portion, the extensions of the flanges beck; and a reinforcing head section of the 2o being notched where they join the body saine contour as the combined -anges and portion so that when the iianges are turned secured to the ianges at each side of the reel. at right angles and the body portions of the In testimony whereof, I have signed my sections are placed back to back, a continunaine to this specification, in the presence of 0 ous flange is formed with the edges abutting two subscribing Witnesses.
at points beyond the body portion. n A
3. The combination in a reel, of two-sec- EUGENE CARRAIN-E tions, each section consisting of a body porl/Vitnesses: tion and a iiztnge at each side thereof, the WM. E. SHUPE,
15 fianges beinggreater in length than the VM. A. BARR.
